Making the news indicates the time to act has already passed.

We're no different than Weimar Germany. Pretty soon we'll be taking our dollars in wheelbarrows to the store to get a loaf of bread. That's what happens when you print money to get out of a recession.

Obama is printing 85 billion a month to prop up his regime. The day of reckoning is coming.

If that was the case then buy all the gold you can. Buy it by the barrels.

Agreed. Selling Au doesn't signal inflation.

Debt deflation.

One theory out there is that much of the economic growth that has been seen over the past 40 years was all borrowed. That it wasn't tangible. If that debt gets paid back (or defaulted on) then deflation occurs.

That's seen in price drops after bubbles pop.

So, the theory is that personal debt is getting paid down. Bankers don't like this, and have been spurring gov't to borrow more to make up for it, as well as keeping interest rates super-low to encourage borrowing. But Fed gov't borrowing hasn't been able to keep up, and some local gov'ts have actually been reducing debt too.

This can lead to a depression, or as some people have insisted, we're actually already in one.

Now, I may have a few details not quite stated precisely, but overall this is a reasonably accurate description of at least one theory. And it fits with a thermodynamics understanding of the economy.

Are we in a depression?
