Happens everywhere. Stop the bitching.

Really it has little to do with that. I've seen the same thing when we've played top 10 ranked conference teams and have been about even at half time.

RE: Half time/Half empty
People stay, when they are emotionally invested in the result or when this is the place to be.

Losing hurts this, unfamiliar opponents, boring games, anything other than 72 degrees and no rain. I can see where people would get up and walk at halftime, but the key is to return back to where staying in the stadium is better than other options.

I recall a time in Godwin/Covo - when you could not get a game ticket and wanted nothing more than to be there at the end to sing 'hey.. hey ... good-bye). Same goes for football, I recall the freezing 2008 playoff game against Villanova - a December Saturday night and lots of fans stuck through the whole game. Unfortunately, it seems to run in cycles and now the pattern is to leave at halftime no matter the score or opponent.

Hahaha at the person comparing this to OSU/Northwestern. Of course nobody left OSU/Northwestern, it was the biggest game in Northwestern history and half full of OSU fans to boot. Northwestern has had years of crappy attendance before and OSU is rarely full for a scrub opponent late in the third.

It also looks worse than it aactually is since we now have 10k more seats to fill.

How many people stayed at the Tech game when we beat them? If I recall correctly, there weren't many people Tech fans there at the end of that one.

RE: Half time/Half empty
I've told you all this a few times already, but I will say it again. The key to learning, after all is repetition. JMU has become a school of academic nerds. Their SATs are too high and the competition to get in is too great. Not enough fuzz nut mediocre students to be football crazy, stay to the last minute, football above everything else nuts.

The average JMU student doesn't know App State from Bloomsburg U. It doesn't make any difference who we play. They get there late and leave early. EVERY game.

When I was there, the average SAT was probably around 900 to 1,000. Guys only cared about sports. Girls would come to games because there were 3 of them to every guy. Competition was fierce. Now, not so much.

Not sure if the end zone is student seating at Tech but here's a pic at the end of the game. Looks like the season ticket holders stayed but that whole end zone section is deserted. I remember being impressed that as many people stayed as long as they did w/ the lousy weather.

I think it's also indicative of the level of play, apathy towards the opponent, etc. People wouldn't leave a UVA or Tech game early, unless the home team is getting blown out. They'd leave ECU or ODU games early though, especially if it involved a 2+ hour drive back home before the sun sets.

They'd leave if either team was being blown out.

Doesn't help that student side is faces afternoon sun, and was mid 80s.

Yesterday wasn't so much the problem. It's games like W&M last year that was an overtime game on a perfect day and half the people left. Those are the ones that really confound me. I really believe in selling beer in the stadium. Put it on the meal plan.

Yep- lots of IA schools do it.

What a weekend at jmu. Got a taste of what they mean by southern hospitality. Arrived Thursday, watched hoop practice on Friday, football on Saturday and many parent weekend events. MY daughter, a freshman from ny is loving her time at jmu and my wife and I are just so impressed with everything here. Well done jmu

I'm glad to hear of your family's great experience. Your daughter has made a great choice.

At least the students showed up and left at half-time. At Alabama's last home game against Georgia State the students did not even bother showing up.

You know your team is bad when Alabama students cant even make it to the game. http://thebiglead.com/2013/10/05/alabama...gia-state/

Against Liberty we had our first stripe out. Actually turned out pretty good. I was worried that if they didnt take the picture early our stadium would be half empty at half time as well. Needless to say we did not have to worry about that.

We were playing Albany and kids had parents trying to get to Chili's in a blow-out. UD had ranked JMU AND were honoring their 03 team. No students...none.

Pretty sure we have a problem other schools would love to have.

UD has always had that problem with student attendance. Part of it is the stadium isn't really within walking distance of campus (unless you want to take a long ass walk) so the students just don't bother. It's just not the cool thing to do there. I remember I dated a girl who graduated from there and she actually liked football and the first UD game she ever went to was with me when they played JMU. She said it just wasn't something that even game up. Nobody ever planned their day around the football game. I know it's a pain in the ass when you don't have a true on campus stadium but I'm sure they have shuttle buses for the students.

The funny thing is that UD is in some random contest for most underrated atmosphere. Can't have an underrated atmosphere when you have no atmosphere.
