And it could be argued that Johnson wasn't given a chance to prove what kind of head coach he would be. They haven't improved with him gone.

**** 'em. They've got a pretty damned warped perspective on college football themselves.

Yeah, so warped it's gotten them a couple of national championships in the past decade. I don't want UAB or its fans to turn into UA or their fans, but at least they care about success. UAB doesn't give a damn. It's just about sticking it in the eye of ol' PBJ and Finis and everything else be damned.

Taking a 10-2 team to 0-12 (the first winless season in USM history) was all they needed to know. He stunk as a HC at The Citadel too.

It seems to me, that it is more about you finding validation for supporting your team from a group of people who couldn't care less if your team disappeared tomorrow. There has to be some Freudian explanation for that.

No, it's about being proud of my school, and as far as football is concerned, I am a long way from it.

How do you find pride from external acceptance?

Really? Attendance in the major sports is terrible. We haven't been to a bowl since 2004 or won an NCAA tournament game since 2005. The perception of UAB athletics is at an all-time low.

But other than that things are great I guess.

Your reply shows everything that's wrong with our fan base. Our athletic department is barely 30 years old yet has won CUSA softball, basketball, & baseball titles in the past three years. Our men's soccer program is one of the best in the country. UAB volleyball has multiple NCAA tournament bids in the last five years. Womens basketball has had three straight winning seasons. Our golf team has played in the national title round multiple times as well. Under Mackins watch we've improved Bartow Arena, built a softball stadium, updated football facilities, added sports (sand volleyball & bowling) & got our baseball team set up to use Regions Park. Your right that basketball has been down (even though we did win a conference title two years ago) but those problems were from a coach Mackin didn't hire. The one he has hired appears to be a steal. While McGee is still building you tell me who would have been a better hire? McGee was the top assistant for a team that played in a BCS bowl game. He was up for the top assistant award in college football. Please try and analyze the entire situation before making a quick response post to a football loss.

I don't think Mackin needs to go, but Green has a point. The best hire has been Haase because his sport has a tradition and his effort. Compare the two Hasse: North Carolina,Roy Williams, USA under 18 teamer, and lowly assistant. McGee: Arkansas, Petrino, former QB. McGee or Johnson was never the top recruiters at Arkansas. Heck McGee has done a whole 360 since his first press conference.

Higher talent level increases coaching acumen. Auburn's average talent level has players whose ratings exceed all but the few best players at USM. Keep in mind that Johnson's record at USM was the same as O'Leary's first season at UCF and look where they are now.

I hold a degree from a world-renowned research university. Most of those rubes couldn't name three man-made structures on that campus not named after a coach if you spotted them Denny Chimes and the Gorgas House.

**** 'em.

Yep, the ole' "we have everything we need to compete for CUSA titles NOW", and the "we can win a CUSA title with homegrown talent". I think he really meant it too. I haven't given up on McGee, but I feel much better about the Haase hire.

O'Leary didn't inherit a defending conference champion, and a team that'd averaged 9-10 wins the previous few seasons.

What was he suppose to say? I can't win at UAB because we have poor facilities, a lack of fan support, and a bot that's trying to ruin us. He said what he said for his current and future players. Where do you guys come up with some of this stuff?

Actually, the campus that McGee recruits to is vastly superior to the one Watson showed to prospects: new weight room, new academic center, new rec center, new cafeteria, new dorms and classrooms. Somehow Brown was able to eek out a few winning seasons, big wins, and draft picks. I have a freshman at UAB so I know exactly how much the campus has changed. It was a DUMP in 2000 compared to how it is now.

These things are nice, but I was talking more along the lines of what did McGee have to work with on the field? Clearly, our defense was nowhere near respectable when he took over. I don't know how you fix that overnight like you want.

You don't. And a new coach or athletic director doesn't fix it. A new OCS doesn't fix it. As I said in another thread, the infrastructure is in place for UAB to be a bad team. I don't see it changing.
You are right. A new coach or athletic director won't fix it. But I disagree and I believe that a new OCS "will" fix it. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Mackin and McGee sold every seat in a new stadium within three months after approval. That, in itself, is also exactly why the BOT is so terrified of. Can you imagine how much deeper UAB could go, as far as recruiting goes?

A stadium isn't going to change how UAB is perceived. It isn't going to change how the media covers us. It isn't going to convert 1000‘s of Bama fans to UAB fans. It isn't going to exchange the fact that the BOT is hellbent on creeping us from succeeding. It isn't going to change the fact that we are in a crappy conference and surrounded by people who think anything but the SEC is crappy. Where the games are played are way down on the list of what is important to recruits. Playing in a big time conference for a winning team with a chance at the NFL is more important to recruits.
A stadium "will" change how UAB is perceived and it "will" change how the media covers us, immensely, to a great extent, extremely.

He says a lot of stuff that doesn't always make much sense. This week (in a PC), he was going on about how good Crumbley looked on his move to the DL, and how much he would impact the game this week. Did anybody even notice him out there?

Following the "McGee talks a good game" meme.

During a particularly frustrating moment of the game, the DJ played Elvis' "A Little Less Conversation (and a lot more action)" the snarky side of me thought, "they're playing your song, coach."

Nope. Maybe his leaving the oline is what contributed to their poor performance. Contrary to popular belief, switching positions mid season is more difficult than McGee lets on.

I wonder if players have outside sources in their ears giving them poor advice and bad mouthing their coach.
