Nice guy but we need more than that to ever emerge from sports purgatory.

UAB has the same things in place that the Losing-est Coach in History had available. Actually, the campus that McGee recruits to is vastly superior to the one Watson showed to prospects: new weight room, new academic center, new rec center, new cafeteria, new dorms and classrooms. Somehow Brown was able to eek out a few winning seasons, big wins, and draft picks. I have a freshman at UAB so I know exactly how much the campus has changed. It was a DUMP in 2000 compared to how it is now.

These things are nice, but I was talking more along the lines of what did McGee have to work with on the field? Clearly, our defense was nowhere near respectable when he took over. I don't know how you fix that overnight like you want.

You don't. And a new coach or athletic director doesn't fix it. A new OCS doesn't fix it. As I said in another thread, the infrastructure is in place for UAB to be a bad team. I don't see it changing.

Fixing it overnight would have been last year. By now we should see some signs of coaching. I agree we are not overly talented but mentally we are playing some atrocious football right now. We just look like a very poorly coached football team.

Yes, I'm certain that smart, well-connected, high powered AD's everywhere are lining up to compete for the UAB job, where facilities for football suck and the Board of Trustees actively hamstrings any attempt to improve them.

Macin's done pretty well at incrementally improving things facility wise, and he's playing the hand he's been dealt.

Yeesh, guys.

Your reply shows everything that's wrong with our fan base. Our athletic department is barely 30 years old yet has won CUSA softball, basketball, & baseball titles in the past three years. Our men's soccer program is one of the best in the country. UAB volleyball has multiple NCAA tournament bids in the last five years. Womens basketball has had three straight winning seasons. Our golf team has played in the national title round multiple times as well. Under Mackins watch we've improved Bartow Arena, built a softball stadium, updated football facilities, added sports (sand volleyball & bowling) & got our baseball team set up to use Regions Park. Your right that basketball has been down (even though we did win a conference title two years ago) but those problems were from a coach Mackin didn't hire. The one he has hired appears to be a steal. While McGee is still building you tell me who would have been a better hire? McGee was the top assistant for a team that played in a BCS bowl game. He was up for the top assistant award in college football. Please try and analyze the entire situation before making a quick response post to a football loss.

You are right. A new coach or athletic director won't fix it. But I disagree and I believe that a new OCS "will" fix it. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Mackin and McGee sold every seat in a new stadium within three months after approval. That, in itself, is also exactly why the BOT is so terrified of. Can you imagine how much deeper UAB could go, as far as recruiting goes?

It is obvious that you haven't taken an in-depth look at what is going on with our football team. Look at the defensive depth chart, notice all of the freshmen and sophomores on the two deep chart, then ask yourself how can you build a stout defense overnight with guys two years removed from high school. It is also painfully obvious that you haven't played, coached, or been a part of a successful program. For if you had you wouldn't be making such asinine statements.

McGee hasn't been perfect but he has been a good hire with the possibility of being a great hire. There are only a handful of programs that have the cache to expect a two year turnaround from extremely bad to simply competitive. Your expectation has to be inline with the potential of the position and the head coaching position at UAB is simply a catch 22. You have a university with unlimited potential but a department that is limited by support. We a have a bot that wants us to figure out which came first the chicken or the egg. We have a fan base that's trying to put the cart before horse. We have a media that believes that even if UAB improves and there's no one there to see, have they really improved?

I guess what I am saying is that McGee is a must win, no win situation. He has to win to validate improvement in the program but he should win by building a solid foundation. You can't build a solid foundation with quick fixes but you can't win quickly without taking some aggressive short cuts. Win now and the suitors are coming, win later and your fan base is eroded. Win and leave then you are Mike Anderson, win and stay... for what?

There is old adage that says, either you are part of the problem or you are part of the solution. Here is my question for you microwave, fair weather, and fragile fans, which one are you?

UAB has always been two average quarters of football from knocking off a BCS team, or being 8-4, or winning the conference, or whatever. But, they never are. At the end of the day, though, the team is always 3-9, 2-10, getting blown out, or pissing away 24 point leads in the fourth quarter. I would rather UAB not put a team on the field that is embarrassing and gets us laughed at by everyone else in this state. I absolutely despise the things that are said to me by an Alabama fan when I walk down the street wearing a UAB shirt. The problem is they're usually right--either about UAB being a terrible team or the fact that the fan base is nonexistent. A football team should inspire pride in a school. As it stands I find myself more and more leaving my UAB gear in the closet between August and November.

Then we are throwing perfectly good money down the toilet for no good reason.

It's time for UAB to decide what it's going to be, within the constraints it has. Is it fair the Board hampers UAB? No, but that's the way it is and no amount of bitching on BlazerTalk is going to undo it. Meanwhile we're hurting the image of UAB overall because it looks like UAB administration are the incompetent ones.

A stadium isn't going to change how UAB is perceived. It isn't going to change how the media covers us. It isn't going to convert 1000‘s of Bama fans to UAB fans. It isn't going to exchange the fact that the BOT is hellbent on creeping us from succeeding. It isn't going to change the fact that we are in a crappy conference and surrounded by people who think anything but the SEC is crappy. Where the games are played are way down on the list of what is important to recruits. Playing in a big time conference for a winning team with a chance at the NFL is more important to recruits.

Perspective is a funny thing. From my perspective your post is exemplary of what is wrong with what is left of UAB's fan base. They are so beat down that they take minor accomplishments as major ones. They perceive mediocrity as excellence. Mackin has made superficial improvements to UAB athletics. He was forced to build the softball field due to collective legal action by softball parents. He refurbished Bell Gym. He had some classrooms built. He got some new seats and a scoreboard for Bartow Arena. Not unworthy accomplishments but quite small compared to the rest of FBS.

Attitudes like yours are what kept Murry, Watson, Callaway and Davis past their expiration date, with disastrous consequences. UAB has made an institution of sticking with losers.

I ask them, "So, where'd you go to school?"

Usually shuts them right the hell up.

The point is the perception among the wider public.

You could quit being a fan of UAB's and burn your UAB stuff in front of your bama friends since you care so much about what they think.

Ellis Johnson was considered one of the best DC's in the country too. He was fired after 1 season at USM. He has helped AU's defense out a lot since being hired down there. Being a good assistant coach doesn't translate into being a good HC. If I were the AD making a hire, I would much rather have a proven winning HC from a lower level school.......preferably one that's had to cut grass, chalk fields, etc. somewhere in his coaching career.

**** 'em. They've got a pretty damned warped perspective on college football themselves.
