Unlikely. The gold helmets from last year were the same helmets we wore all year. They just sent them out to be painted and then the decal was applied. Meaning the helmets we have and wear all the time are our only helmets.
Don't they have to be repainted blue every week anyways?? I do remember reading both Nielsen & Haynes saying the gold would not come back under their watch, that it was a "Hazell" thing and one time deal. But...they totally contradicted that when they wore them in the spring game so who knows...
I would be in favor of bringing them back for this game, hope it happens, but would have to see it to believe it.
RE: Week 6 - NIU @ KSU - Homecoming & MAC Championship Game Revenge Opportunity
They wore gold in the spring to save the helmets. Painted them blue again in the fall. If you look at some of the guys in the trenches that have a bunch of scratches on their helmets you can see the gold layer shining through. IMO it looks terrible up close. They definitely don't get repainted every week
RE: Week 6 - NIU @ KSU - Homecoming & MAC Championship Game Revenge Opportunity
I'm interested to see how this rematch goes. Both are different teams.
I haven't been able to watch as many MAC games as i normally have this season so i cannot comment on Kent. I'm interested to see the play of the new QB. While he could turn out to be better, i would not discount your last QB who was a seasoned veteran.
I definitely expect Archer and Durham to get their yards and touches this week. We've been giving up LOTS of yards to everyone. The area that this defense has achieved greater success than last year's is turnovers (tied for 6th in the nation in turnover margin) and sacks (and tied for 1st in the nation in sacks).

Wasn't aware of this. I always thought they repainted and had new decals applied before the game cos they always looked scratch free and undamaged before every game (as observed from the stands, obviously I've never been right next to one so maybe I'm wrong there). Must have some nice polish and buffers laying around to clean them up so well if that's not the case. Thanks for the info.

Yet both are so similar in that we will still have the Archer & Durham tandem and you guys have the Lynch factor. On paper it is a very interesting match-up: your sack happy D, vs our young O-line, our rushing attack vs. your poor rush deffense, your outstanding turnover margain vs. our offense which has turned the ball over very little this year etc. then you meld all this to the factor of having a home crowd for KSU and I think it has the makings to be a very entertaining game, which is exactly what we had last time we faced off.
RE: Week 6 - NIU @ KSU - Homecoming & MAC Championship Game Revenge Opportunity
ON D.
Getting Wells with more playing time than he had vs Purdue should help, but we still lost a lot from last year. I don't think we've played as well as we did with Baxter and Progar. Losing Rashan Melvin dips the secondary a little as well although they've played well at times they have played really bad at times too. Linebacker coverage not so good this year either. Which is why we bend and occasionally break. Easier to cover when there's less field. I think we are well coached which has us in position to make plays, we don't always make them. Missed tackles and some TD burns which scares me against Archer after the big catch he had in the MACC when our front was better. Stone was hit or miss last year, mostly miss IMO so no loss but not having Melvin hurts.
On O
Another year for the o-line to jel. Stingley is a load to stop and takes away the need to run Jordan inside designed plays. Don't know when or if we get Akeem Daniels back. Keith Harris Jr. has been doing well but not the same as Daniels last few games last year. Sabastiano got rocked by the Targeted hit in the EIU game and may not be available after missing Purdue as well. He has the most consistent hands on the team IMO tight battle with Tommy Lee Lewis. Brown seams to catch difficult passes but drop easy passes. Brescasin has huge size 6-4 225 and played well against Purdue. Tommy Lee can take the cover off the top with great hands and can also turn a short pass into a big gain. Also dangerous on Jet Sweep.
Losing Moore and Ashford from the 2012 team was a loss, but I think Jordan's accuracy is so much better this year which offsets the loss a bit. His arm looks stronger which may be why he's staying in the pocket more. He's still getting his yards on the ground as well. Does look to be a bit banged up, but is still the ultimate competitor and will play through the pain which I believe is a deep bone bruise.

What's even more impressive to me is the fact that "freshman qb" has only thrown 2 interceptions so far this year too.

These numbers will really be tested Saturday. NIL is among the nation's best in sacks per game.

If you have a better QB, even more so. Although with a young QB we may have a better chance at interceptions, and we've had quite a few already. I think we'll do reasonably well at bottling up Durham. Just a guess, obviously, it depends how we decide to defend.
Special teams will be interesting. Will NIU kick to Archer? Will Kent State kick to Lewis? Will both teams give up field position by kicking it short?
I'm not sure that we saw Archer at his best for all 60 minutes of the MACC. If I remember right his ankle was bothering him after a hard hit or two. A healthy Archer is a game changer. Having him and Tommy Lee Lewis in the same game should be entertaining.
This should be another close game between two excellent football teams. I am looking forward to watching the game.

RE: Week 6 - NIU @ KSU - Homecoming & MAC Championship Game Revenge Opportunity
I think its gonna be a great game. Big time playmakers are both squads, so im definitely expecting quite a few big plays. I agreed with Coach Haynes when he said all the pressure is on NIU which it is. KSU has the home field advantage and the ability to play lose to gamble more than usual. Thats why teams like EIU and Idaho were able to stay with us so long. Trick plays, going for it on 4th down, fake punts etc... When you able to just leave it all on the line with nothing to lose, it puts all the pressure on the other team. Luckily, I think NIU has been able to adjust and weather the storm thus far, but every week is different so you never know. Im expecting Kent State to throw everything they can at us to come out with the win in front of their home crowd. We'll get their best shot, and it should be an exciting game. Looking forward to a great game w no injuries on either side!

Now that Kent is healthy, I expect a great game between two very good teams.
The comment of Coach Haynes that the pressure is all on NIU baffles me though. There's a lot of pressure on Kent with them already having one MAC loss. A second MAC loss would make it extremely difficult to get back to Detroit.
The game is somewhat of a must-win for Kent if they have any hope of a MAC Championship.

Whats the difference from the traditional logo and the one used on the current helmets? Am I missing something? I'm not usually a fan of yellow helmets, Toledo's look bad, but those Kent ones are pretty slick.

There is no difference, that is the traditional logo. Folks are referring to the only time in recent history we wore yellow helmets was in our bowl game last year and we had a different logo (which actually wasn't the logo).

Coach Haynes elaborated on that comment a lot more in the press conference. He mentioned a couple times what a huge game this is for Kent as far as setting up the rest of the season from here on out.
That comment was more less to reflect the "us against the world" attitude we have going into the game as most of the people in and around the MAC & ESPN have given Kent no chance of winning tomorrow. He said the same people have already cast the MAC Trophy for NIU... he said we need to show up and execute and let NIU worry about proving everyone right...
BTW- huge fan of the instragram pic! Really wish we'd wear those tomorrow with the blue jersey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RE: Week 6 - NIU @ KSU - Homecoming & MAC Championship Game Revenge Opportunity
He made that comment because it is true. Northern is the ranked team. Northern is the team which has won back-to-back conference titles and made a BCS appearance. Northern is the league favorite. Realistically we were not going to compete for the conference or division title this year. If that baffles you, you must not know much about football.

Can't help to be a bit annoyed by your pessimism. So I guess with your thinking just 'cos the media didn't pick us to win the MAC this year we should just roll over and say maybe next year? Nobody picked us to do anything last year and we were one play away from a BCS game...so how did that work out?
"Realistically" tomorrow is winnable game as is the next 6 after that. As of now we are very much still a player in the Division & Conference race. If you're ready to skip into basketball season already that's fine with me, but I'll stick around through November to see how this ends up.
