Men's NCAA Basketball National Champions since 2000
Shown by year, 1) National Champion/coach and 2) runner up/coach.

Note:Starting in 2013-2014 Connecticut is the only non-P5 School to have won a National Championship after 2000, and Butler and Memphis are the only non-P5 schools to finish second since 2000. This truly shows how strong the Power 5 conferences really are! And Syracuse is now in the ACC and Louisville joins the ACC in 2014. 07-coffee3

How's this, Willie: since 1980, current or future ACC teams have won the national championship more often (14 times) than they have failed to make the championship game (13 times)!

Excellent 04-cheers

P.S. I know some will get mad at this statement, but the ACC should add Connecticut. 07-coffee3

I'm counting 12 wins, not 13. (Doesn't make sense to include Syracuse and Louisville and still include Maryland.) And then that makes 14 "failed".

I agree you can't count UofL and Maryland. Going off Mark's chart above (which didn't include 2013):
4- UNC, Duke
3- UofL
1- Syracuse, NC State
13 Total not including Maryland

So 2013 isn't included in the list. That makes 13. I knew my count was right.

If the ACC were to add Connecticut, the count would be 16 times.07-coffee3

It would also make it only 12 times that a team didn't make it at all.

That said there is a such thing as too much of a good thing. The Old Big East got better as an overall league when the top 3 weren't as overbearing. Historically speaking with four programs so much at the top, it is likely that some middle tier programs will suffer, like they did in the Big East, unless the middle tier programs bring the historically top tier programs back to earth. To an extent I think that will happen with UNC and Duke, who will not enjoy the overwhelming regular season success they have in the past, with the additions of Pitt, Syracuse, Notre Dame, and Louisville strengthening the middle and top tiers on a year in, year out basis.

Fortunately, some of those teams will only play each other once during the regular season - thus keeping the losses under control. But I agree that you CAN have too many good teams (in any sport).

In the Big East you only played 3 teams twice. Didn't matter. The year when Louisville, UConn, and Pitt were all number one seeds, with the middle tier still top 4 seeds, the bottom HALF of the conference got hammered. That's what I am referring to. Two years later, when there was no number 1 seed level team 11 teams got in the tournament, with the ninth place team winning it all.
