The whole thing is tragic.

Channel 5 reported the driver was a HS friend who attends Miami. Suspicion of alcohol involved.

I heard the driver is one of the ones listed in critical condition. If he makes it and if in fact alcohol was involved, I'm pretty sure he will be facing criminal charges.

Losing loved ones at such a young age is tragic and my thoughts go out to those who are grieving.

He and Mark Barr, a freshman WR who was redshirting for UC, were listed in critical condition. One of them was scheduled to be taken off of life support once family arrived to say their goodbyes, I was not told who, but I was told by authorities handling the situation who would know exact details. Javon Harrison, the other person injured in the accident, is also on UC's football team and listed in serious but stable condition. I was also told the driver was a friend of Ben Flick's. If that is the case, I couldn't imagine the guilt, and that is without the speculation of alcohol actually being true or not.

This whole thing is just horrendous. First the Munchie season ending injury which shook up the team (it was a bad injury to witness) and now, this is 100x worse. Tough year so far.

My prayers are with the families and all who are involved. This is a parent's worst nightmare; they'll never be the same. There is no "closure".

Young people think all those warnings about drinking & driving (or texting & driving) don't apply to them.

Ben Flick of Hamilton, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred south of Oxford.

Receivers Mark Barr of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Javon Harrison of Dayton, Ohio, were taken by helicopter to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Barr and the driver of the vehicle -- whose identity has not been released -- were listed in critical condition. Harrison was in stable condition.

The three players are redshirting and didn't dress for the game or travel with the team. They were returning from Oxford, located 25 miles north of Cincinnati.

RE: Cincinnati lineman Flick dies in car accident
My condolences to the victim and his family!

I recently retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Crash Division of the Bureau of Highway Safety. Part of my job was to process request from highway safety engineers (and others) of crash data of various statistics including crashes involving distracted drivers, alcohol related, young drivers, etc.

The safety engineers often looked for possible road improvements (speed limits, traffic lights, etc.) but legislatures used the data to pass laws (Helmet Laws, Click It or Ticket, etc.).

If you are interested in reviewing some of the statistics (crashes, fatalities, etc.) please click on the Crash Facts and Statistics Book. The link brings you to a relevant page but the rest of the book may interest you as well. Some of the statistics may surprise you while others are predicable.

Interesting statistics... What stands out to me is that old people are (overall) safer drivers than I thought, but seem to struggle at intersections. The chart on page 24 explains why insurance costs so much for young drivers.

Praying for you, Bearcats.
