Theory: Our defense yesterday
We gave up a lot of points and yards. We always give up a lot of points and yards, but considering the opponent you could say we gave up a suspiciously large number of both points and yards.

BUT, I've never heard a coach come out after a "buy" game and say outright some of the things McGee has said. If you take it all together, he basically said that this was a team we could "out talent" so the staff intentionally sought to put pressure on our defense. Personally, I don't think he just meant kicking off to start both halves. That's not exactly "constant" pressure all day. I just watched the game on All-Access, but what I gather from McGee's comments - and that he made a point to air them - is that the coaches made minimal effort, on purpose, to react to what the opponent was doing. We put our guys in a base formation with m2m coverage and let them adjust to game day speed with that for 4 quarters.

Again, I'm just trying to put McGee's comments in context, but perhaps we could have run the defensive system we did against Troy State and LSU and held Nwestern St to 10 points. Instead, IF they took this game to shake out changes that are coming - starting next week in Nashville - it would mean giving up more points yesterday making mistakes so we don't have to make those mistakes next week (and for the rest of the year).

Not sure about how basic the defense was, but we did substitute quite a bit and the outcome of the game wasn't in doubt after the first few series.

We improved, but there is work still to be done.

I agree with that assessment.

I think that's an interesting and potentially valid theory. I didn't see the coaches giving much instruction to the defense midgame.

Yet, Coach McGee is putting himself on the line with the kickoff deferral thing that I'd never known about until now, it's on the front page of this week's K-Scope! I sort of get what he's trying to do, but this is as big a gamble as he's taken since he signed on to coach this team.
