There is a group of millions of adults age 18-28 who are living on their own but that have never paid for news, but are the most informed generation in history. They watch unlimited television, movies without spending more than a $10 bill per month. Cable tv & print news & magazines are going bye bye. Give it 20 years tops. We'll be using our air touch projectors to read, watch, listen & play. We'll pay for what we actually use. No more 300 channels for the 5 we actually watch.(Netflix & espn3) No more 100 pages of paper for the 1 page we read. No more 20 song CDs for the 1 we like(oops, that's already happening iTunes.)

These aren't things to worry about, but celebrate. Information makes us more free than ever before.

I don't think they are the most informed generation in history. I think there is simply more information now than ever in history.

Bingo! Kudos. You said what I was trying to say in two sentences.

Actually some of both is true. For those who want it, they absorb tons of information in ways you never could before. I spent a few years of my career studying all demographics and how they obtain their information. Amazing statistics.

It would be interesting to know your definition of "information" in those studies.

I caught onto this change when my children were in high school about 10 years ago. Their teachers were either writing their own "manuals" to use instead of textbooks, or were using textbooks but only covering certain chapters. Some classes had 70% of their content in a video format.

By information I mean searches for almost anything. I spent a few years with AT&T doing research determining who still looked for info in the yellow pages, who searched for info from their pc, and who searched for info from their smartphones; searches for nearest restaurant, type of restaurant, movie show times, plumbers, lawyers, florists, accountants, car dealers. Interesting and eye opening stats on how that divides among baby boomers, x-gen and y-gen users.

I remember one of those "take your daughter to work" days while she was in college at Memphis. I was showing her our "new" phones, PCs, email, our version of "bizhub" machines and a few other tools, and she gives me that look and just held up her smartphone. This was about 2007. Don't what phone it was then. But she made a presentation in one of her classes and had downloaded everything to her phone and projected it via blue tooth for a power point. Jeez.

My grandkids barely know what a CD is.

They want me to pay twice my netflix membership to read news I can get elsewhere.

I'll pass....

Hell, we can stay caught up on local news just by reading this board.

It's a great link to my hometown and gives me the pulse of what's going on. Back before this online stuff, I had the CA delivered to my door wherever I was living - it may have been a day late, but I still got it.

I'm like you. I live out of town, so that is a great link to keep up with my hometown. Between reading that and listening to online radio, its almost like I live in a different suburb of Memphis.
To me $13.99 is a small price not to feel too homesick.

No. I actually had a paper route that I use to run in the mornings while my wife was in college. I had a very large route that included a lot of apartments. The CA use to pay more for apartments since you have to actually get out of your car and walk around to deliver the papers. I had to do it rain or shine, sick or well, 365 days a year. One day, out of the blue, they change our signed contract to give us less pay. We started getting charged for bags, charged for sections missing out of the paper (which we had no control over), charged for people stealing someone elses paper(you can only imagine how many times that happened in the apartments), and wanted to pay me the same as someone with zero apartments to throw. You can throw 200 houses in the same amount of time it takes you to throw less than 50 apartments, so imagine a route with over 200 apartments that got the paper. Thats just the tip of the iceburg.

I'm an out of towner that will not pay 14 bucks a month for Tiger bball coverage. The only thing local in Memphis I care about is Tiger basketball. And 14 is too much for online tiger coverage. I use Tune Radio to catch the GP show. GP has them CA idiots talking about their articles for free!

TV news web sites are terrible. One minute blurbs, or three paragraphs ain't news reporting.

Totally agree. If you rely on tv news and their websites to stay informed, you end up a dunce, and a totally jaded one at that.
