I think that UAB Samford bib all would be a good draw for the first couple of games, kinda like UAB B'ham Southern was a few years back. It would be nice to see a 5,000 crowd for a Nov/Dec basketball game.

In fact, I would like to see the Blazers play BSC again. If we're gonna play sisters of the poor, why not keep it local?

How about we not play those at all? If we lose to them, the season goes down the drain. If we win, it's not counted or kills SOS and RPI. Just a thought.

I would have no problem with that. But, if we're gonna play exhibition games or d-2/d-3 schools, might as well sell a few tickets.

The women can benefit from playing samford in basketball because Samford has earned an Ncaa Bid the last couples of years and may continue to do so. The Samford men benefit from playing us, but we don't benefit from playing them. JMO

I'd be fine with that.

And what extra fluff stuff would be included to try and steer votes?
And how should it be funded?

I repeated the statement of the GA Dome manager who was quoted after the storm damaged the Dome that they "had over 200 events scheduled for the dome and he wanted to get it repaired before they made other arrangements". I want B'ham to be able to attract some of those "over 200" events which might include a bowl game or two.

What is your definition of "fluff stuff"? I would expect that any major project might be altered / equipped to produce as many "multitasking features" as possible. Before the present BJCC concrete floor was poured, the Ringling company was asked to lay out the tie-down spots needed for the circus to use. Some conventions may likewise have technical needs that we can meet.

How are such installations funded elsewhere? I don't believe ANY such structure is funded entirely by one city's money so the state and metro area and some private investors, perhaps through bond sales would have to be on board. If no one wants to build such a facility, then your grandchildren may be able to see games at Legion Field in 2050, just as we will Saturday. Just think how "HISTORIC" it will be by then.

03-lmfao Don't leave out "ICONIC"....I cannot believe how many other cities or large universities have turned the page since the mid-90's where modern sports facilities/football venues are concerned, yet Birmingham is still stuck in a time warp with "Lesion" Field, Atlanta will have built not one, but two state of the art all-purpose arenas before this place even breaks ground on one again...Sadly, UAB has to suffer with them as one of its' very few tenants left (UAB, SIAC & MCC for now, that's all I know of). It's like being the host to an obvious parasite. Can't wait to find out how many more years the Blazers have to sign on to renew a lease with that place...I'm getting nauseous just thinking about it...

(basketball) I would be perfectly fine with dropping Troy and never playing them again and replacing them with Samford. I would also be all for a home and home. I would do JSU, ASU, and A&M two for ones. All relatively close for travel as well. The only other state team I would do is USA home and home. In the reality of our situation we are going to play some crappy teams OOC and I would rather play ASU a two or three for one and not pay them a dime than pay for Savannah State or ANY DII team to come to town. We simply should not be playing DII teams period.

I am all for playing the Bulldogs home and home. It would be nice to take over the Hannah Center.

If Troy wants to play it should be a buy game until they can elevate their program to being somewhat respectable.

In the early 1980s, coach Bartow started a three game series with Samford. I think he had visions of a packed out BJCC with an intense crosstown rivalry. That didn't develop as there were very little Samford fans in attendance at the games . In second or last game in the series, coach Mike Hanks let the air out of the ball by going four corners and holding the ball the entire game (before the shot clock). Resulted in a score of 30-28 or something like that, and a bored crowd. It was the last game of the season, and caused Oliver Robinson's streak of consecutive 20 point games to be broken. He may have had a national streak on the line too. Bartow refused to renew the series after that and stated that UAB had nothing to gain by playing them, especially if they were going to use gimmicks like that.

Haven't played them since except for a early tournament matchup in Ohio a few years ago. I'm really ambivalent about playing them especially if they don't bring anyone to the games.

I remember that game well. Awful to watch. We used that strategy at Cincy one year. We slowed the game down and lost 40-38 I think. But im sure that was different.Btw I don't think playing Samford helps generate any great interest either. You know what does? UAB WINNING!!! Going to the NCAA TOURNAMENT every year!!!
