Too many football games have been memorable between the two. From the epic overtimes, UTEP selling out the Sun Bowl then storming the field as Rice was driving in UTEP's red zone, to epic field goal win/lost games.
This is the 13 or 14th year?
Doesnt it take both teams to acknowledge the rivalry to have a rivalry?
I have never heard of the UTEP/Rice rivalry
The series has had some very memorable games, but I'm not sure I'd call it a rivalry either.
You can have a rivalry due to sheer proximity. Rice and UH are as different as two schools can be, but that's definitely a rivalry, because you can't avoid each other. We're competing for local bragging rights and for space on the local TV highlight reel.
You can have a rivalry due to similarity. Many students who applied to Rice also applied to Tulane, SMU, UT, and/or A&M, and many of their high school friends ended up at those schools. Bragging rights without someone to needle about it isn't very exciting.
You can have a rivalry due to history. Rice vs Texas will always be special because of the JFK speech. Rice vs SMU will always be heated because of Rice's 146-3 victory in the inaugural game, and because of all the beatings we took at the hands of the Pony Expre$$. The Tulsa game was a big deal around campus for a while because of the whole Todd Graham debacle.
Rice has a little bit of history with UTEP, but neither similarity nor proximity. I don't think you'll see any casual Rice fans calling UTEP a rival for a while, especially since you don't play baseball. Then again, since all of our natural rivals have left, who knows?
UTEP-UTSA have similarity and history, though, so I bet that'll become an entertaining rivalry in C-USA 3.0.
