New I-10 rivalry.... UTEP vs UTSA
UTEP has had an I-10 rivalry for as long as there has been an I-10, with NMSU. This article talks about the possible decline of NMSU athletics (personally I think they will recover eventually) and the start of a brand new I-10 rivalry with the Roadrunners.

I think there have been enough threads created over the "hand sign" to warrant the start of this rivalry. Both fanbases seem to think the other has copied various things from the other. Now you'll both be playing in the same Conference. The conference needs rivalries.

Heck, create a trophy, go all out. Print up T-shirts. Come up with a different name for the rivalry. Based on this wikipedia page, there was something called the San Antonio-El Paso Road.

Maybe make something out of that...

How about the "Golden Egg" trophy. Miners are always looking for Gold...and Roadrunners lay eggs.

I think there is likely going to be a I35 rivalry with UNT and even a I-10 (opposite direction) rivalry with Rice. We are centrally located to all 3 schools

A trophy would be a good idea. We have two trophies for the NMSU game:

"The winner of the annual matchup receives a pair of traveling trophies. The older of the two is known as the Silver Spade. It is a replica of an old prospector's shovel found in an abandoned mine in the Organ Mountains near Las Cruces and has been traded between the schools since 1955. A second trophy, officially titled the Mayor's Cup but commonly nicknamed the Brass Spittoon, was added in 1982."

The 2 mayors need to have a friendly wager on this game as well. If UTEP wins, the SA mayor provides free buckets of KFC chicken to the EP mayor and, God forbid, if UTSA wins, the EP mayor sends a box of Chico's tacos to the SA mayor. The SA mayor would also receive a 2 day supply of tp to go with the tacos.

Absolutely! Good for the conference to have rivalries.

New I-10 rivalry.... UTEP vs UTSA
The only true Texas conference rival UTEP has is Rice. Too many football games have been memorable between the two. From the epic overtimes, UTEP selling out the Sun Bowl then storming the field as Rice was driving in UTEP's red zone, to epic field goal win/lost games.
This is the 13 or 14th year?

UTSA vs UTEP is more of a UT civil war.

Doesnt it take both teams to acknowledge the rivalry to have a rivalry?

I have never heard of the UTEP/Rice rivalry

Speaking of rivalries I really hope the MT-UAB rivalry picks up.

I have never heard of the UTEP/Rice rivalry

The series has had some very memorable games, but I'm not sure I'd call it a rivalry either.

You can have a rivalry due to sheer proximity. Rice and UH are as different as two schools can be, but that's definitely a rivalry, because you can't avoid each other. We're competing for local bragging rights and for space on the local TV highlight reel.

You can have a rivalry due to similarity. Many students who applied to Rice also applied to Tulane, SMU, UT, and/or A&M, and many of their high school friends ended up at those schools. Bragging rights without someone to needle about it isn't very exciting.

You can have a rivalry due to history. Rice vs Texas will always be special because of the JFK speech. Rice vs SMU will always be heated because of Rice's 146-3 victory in the inaugural game, and because of all the beatings we took at the hands of the Pony Expre$$. The Tulsa game was a big deal around campus for a while because of the whole Todd Graham debacle.

Rice has a little bit of history with UTEP, but neither similarity nor proximity. I don't think you'll see any casual Rice fans calling UTEP a rival for a while, especially since you don't play baseball. Then again, since all of our natural rivals have left, who knows?

UTEP-UTSA have similarity and history, though, so I bet that'll become an entertaining rivalry in C-USA 3.0.

RE: New I-10 rivalry.... UTEP vs UTSA
Interesting that even though our last game was in 1988, North Texas has more games vs UTEP than any other CUSA member other than Tulsa. UTEP has played Tulsa & North Texas 21 times. Next in line would be Rice at 17. Personally I look forward to future games with the Miners.

UTEP tried in 1998, but UTSA copied that too
