If you read some of the other Big Ten boards, Akron did beat Michigan today.
I hate to go there, but there were a couple of plays that really stuck out:
1. Akron had a play in the first half where a Michigan defender raked the arm of an Akron receiver on a long pass play (would've been a TD if no interference ... or first and 10 inside the Michigan 20 if called). The same exact play set Michigan up for its go-ahead TD in the fourth ... of course Akron was called for interference. Akron still got a FG on the drive, but who knows what happens if the right call was made.
2. 4th and less than a yard on Michigan's 23 in the second quarter, Bowden decides to originally go for it, then calls off the offense and brings on the FG unit. Then there is a delay of game, pushing it back to the 28. The 45-yard FG then goes off the upright.
First of all, no way should Bowden have even of thought about the field goal in that situation. Go for it. But even when he did decide to go for the FG, you can't push your kicker back 5 yards. Just horrible decision-making. Instead of 10-7 Akron or 7-6 Michigan at the half, it's 7-3.
Same for the end of the game sweep at the Michigan 1. Why make a pitch 7 yards behind the LOS in that situation? You had 23 seconds left, a TO and only needed 1/2 yard for a first down ... run a dive, or some other quick-hitting run up the middle. If nothing else, call the TO and have one final play from the 1. Yeah, Akron got screwed out of 7 seconds (and maybe a first down on a review, don't know how it was overturned), but still, Bowden made a bone-headed call on the sweep. That's the last play you run, with a sophomore QB who can't audible out of it, in that situation.
