Greek system is a good way to meet drunk and easy chicks.

The leadership of each of these racially specific "Greek" organization has the same concern. If we let in the "other", we may lose our power to completely control the chapter.

Look what happened to the White Conservative Power structure of the Alabama Democratic Party when the Voting Rights Act of 1965 opened the party to "minority voters". They lost the absolute control they had enjoyed for the previous 100 years so they jumped to the remaining White Conservative Power structure of the Alabama Republican party.

If the leaders of a "Greek" group loses control, where do they go? Their primary concern is their power structure and doing whatever it takes to maintain it as is. They have no place to "jump to".

They don't mind you running with a ball for them on Saturday, they just don't want to sit next to them the rest of the week.

"In 2003, Tuscaloosa native Carla Ferguson became the first black woman to pledge a traditionally white Panhellenic sorority through formal recruitment. She accepted a bid to Gamma Phi Beta and remains the only black woman to have pledged through the formal recruitment process, over a decade later."

One black woman, ever. That's a damning statistic, and there is simply no way to candy coat it and make it anything but racial prejudice.

They put it back out there. Not sure what was happening earlier.

They did have their whole site (cw.ua.edu) down for a little bit.

Anyone have any ideas how our Greek system fares in this topic?

As much as I respect and appreciate the dissenting voices, I'd respect and appreciate them more if they didn't give those racist bags the satisfaction, and just walked out.

UAB's Greek system is in a different world from UAT's. From my own experience, the diversity at UAB is evident in the Greek organizations as well. As far as I know, every single fraternity and sorority at UAB has members of different races.

Well, let me correct that, all the IFC fraternities and NPC sororities have a diverse membership, or at least that was the case when I was involved (2006-2010). I can't really speak about the NPHC organizations (the historically 'black' orgs) but I do remember meeting a few non-African Americans being involved as well.

A few of the NPHC organizations have members of different races as far as when I was in school. Phi Beta Sigma was very diverse it had Bradley Chavez and a some other members of different ethnicities. Delta Sigma Theta had one white female that I know of when I left. as well as Zeta Phi Beta and I think Sigma Gamma Rho. I think most f those members have graduated by now
The other organizations I can't speak on.

I'm sorry, but this analogy is as false as false can be. Just because you observe the same behavior in two different contexts - in this case, exclusionary actions/policies based on race - doesn't mean the root cause (other than ignorance) is the same.

My chapter at UAB initiated an African-American brother in the mid 90s and one sorority canceled a scheduled mixer with us citing that, specifically, as the reason. Friends in another sorority told us that it was near impossible to get a group to visit our "house" because so many sisters refused to come for the same reason (I don't know if they were afraid they would "catch the black" or that our parties suddenly must resemble NWA or Snoop music vids). That was 2 of 4 sororities. We did fine with the other two plus groups from BSC and Montevallo who expressed no reservations.

As a coda to the story, the young man was only one of many brothers we had who would mark a box other than "Caucasian" on a survey over the years. This year we celebrated with him as he graduated UAB with 3 Ph.D.'s and began his groundbreaking research at Tulane in composing music specifically as therapy for long-term, non-responsive patients (stroke victims, those in comas, autistic individuals, etc.).

I've always wondered the same thing..

I guess so many people, white and black, worship football success so highly that they turn a blind eye to the history of racism at that school.

BINGO!04-cheers

NPHC organizations do to not recruit ANY members regardless of color.
