Summer reading program
My grandkids will be at the game Saturday thanks to a summer reading program. Apparently Rice has a deal with elementary schools in the area that if a child reads so many books over the summer they get a free ticket (upper west stands) to the KU game. Of course the parents have to bring them and buy a ticket. I think it's a good promotion as it gets more people at the game and might generate some new fans. I think they're expecting 2000 kids for the game. Hope they open up some concession stands. Last year they removed all the concessions from the upper deck.

Nah, Rick won't be there. He didn't make it through the reading list.

RE: Summer reading program
It might create more Rice fans. My parents took me to Rice games when I was young in the 1960s and I later went to Rice. It did help that my mother and some of her cousins went to Rice. Also, I got into one game as a Boy Scout usher.

I became a Rice fan when, as a freshman in high school, our band was invited to be part of the MOB for a game. Rice garnered several new fans as a result of that activity that day. That is part of why I'd like to see the MOB include a high school band or two or three every home game if we could swing that! As the big churches have figured out, if you involve the kids, you get entire families...
