Congratulations to Coach Lewis
Perhaps overshadowed by the opening week of pro football ? None-the-less, Guy V finally gets his place in the HoF ...

RE: Congratulations to Coach Lewis
Nothing in the papers mentions that he was at Rice for a time before he went off to World War II. I have seen a picture of him in a Rice basketball uniform but he did not not letter. He moved off to U of H to play after he came back from WWII.

It was strange that Lewis had been ignored so long when he had done so much to promote college basketball. The Astrodome game against UCLA attracted a lot of attention for basketball.

I was on the front row Autry vs Phi Slamma Jamma

when Hakeem or was in Akeem at the time ? blocked the shot into the wall.. it was loud and that ball bounced back to almost mid court

and Sammy got into a fight with Shasta

For what he did to integrate the races in intercollegiate athletics in Texas, if nothing else. He really doesn't get enough credit here, he really does not.

For having the idea and making it happen to play UCLA in the dome in 1968, if nothing else. Everything that is college basketball today came out of that one night.

For developing 3 of the 50 greatest players of all time, if nothing else. Question, the 1982 NCAA semi-final game UH-UNC, including Olajuwon, Drexler, Jordan, Perkins, and Worthy. Was that the most talent ever in one NCAA game? If not, what was?

There are plenty of folks in there who don't even approach ONE of those accomplishments, let alone 3 of them.

In terms of what they turned into in the pros, that's probably a good mix. But I also consider the 1991 UNLV-Duke game to be quite a load: Greg Anthony, Stacey Augmon, Larry Johnson, Christian Laettner, Grant Hill, and Bobby Hurley. Two amazingly stocked programs at the time.

Getting back to the original question, I wasn't too aware of the programs at the time, but certainly sounds deserved. Congrats.
