Texas Coach criteria/ candidates
I'm just curious who people think are possible candidates for the Texas job. My list in no particular order:

Muschamp, though his results at Florida don't inspire much
Peterson, though he seems pretty happy at Boise State
Strong, though as others have said, he might leave for Florida but probably not Texas
Art Briles
Gary Patterson
Petrino (would just be hilarious)
Sumlin (also would be hilarious)
Mike Leach (perhaps the most hilarious)
Dan Mullen, though he was a hotter name a few years ago

I think it has to be someone with a connection to Texas, the state if not the school.

Any other possibilities?

Voted Muschamp because it just seems like they would like the fact that he has been there before as a coach and would understand the crazy atmosphere. That and he is a defensive minded coach and Texas really needs help there.

That would then open the way for Strong to Florida.

Briles would be a can't miss hire. God help the rest of the Big 12 if the Longhorns turned over the UT machine to him.

Other: I think Texas needs a coach with NFL experience this time. UT can afford it. Someone like John Harbaugh, or even Sean Payton. JMO though.

Florida would love for Muschamp to be taken off of their hands so Charlie Strong can come back. Florida is obviously a step behind the good SEC teams.

Being generous, Muschamp is the 3rd best coach in Florida. Maybe 4th behind O'Leary.

I'll readily concede that Texas has more resources than any other college football program and a lot more than all but a very few. However, I don't think they would be able to pry away a successful NFL head coach, and I can't name the last time that happened (to any college).

It is Mack's time to go from a wins/losses standpoint, but they'll miss him when he's gone from the salesman/brownnoser/people person standpoint. That particular job demands a lot of that, and none of those guys you list have it. You can be prickly there and last for a long time only if you win as often as Saban or Meyer or Carroll.

RE: Texas Coach criteria/ candidates
Darrell Royal (1957 - 1976) .797 winning% 3 NC's
Fred Akers (1977 - 1986) .731 winning % 0 NC'c
David McWilliams (1987 - 1991) .544 winning% 0 NC's
John Mackovic (1992 - 1997) .592 winning% 0 NC's
Mack Brown (1998 - present) .777 winning% 1 NC

Darrell Royal was heavily involved with the hiring of all the Texas coaches that followed him 2 did pretty good 2 were clueless idiots. I think Brown will become the next AD (if he doesn't outright retire) and therefore be involved with the replacement process. So far his coaching choices haven't been so hot (Greg Davis, Diaz...etc)

I'm a big fan of Gary Patterson

Then James Franklin is your man.

Franklin isn't going to be hire-able by any major program if any significant part of that Buzzfeed story is true.

Right, but it has to be proven true. That Buzzfeed story seemed more to be painting a picture more than giving straight facts reporting. The evidence against these guys is overwhelming compared to the Duke LAX issue, but I think the lesson learned from Duke is to be very careful about who gets lumped into the guilt by association circle, not to mention some of the recent backsliding of the Joe Paterno situation.
