Question for those critical of Libertarianism
If this country can survive 8 years of GW Bush and it still looks like we can function after 8 years of Obama, why is it that you think we wouldn't survive the same period with virtually no government?

The governing has been transparently incompetent (moreso the past several years than prior), evidently evil, and obviously harmful. Do you think that a random group of morons that didn't waste massive amounts of treasure and lives would do worse? If so, why?

Reducing the size & scope of government is an admirable pipe dream.

RE: Question for those critical of Libertarianism
What does this have to do with being critical of libertarianism?

I'm not sure if you were commenting on my post. If so, my point is that Libertarianism has some noble tenets and goals. My only criticism is that it's impractical. Americans are addicted to federal programs and weaning them off freebies will be impossible.

Sorry, my comment was aimed at the OP.

Seems like he is attempting to correlate the principles of a political ideology to the actions of a political party… which is like comparing a whole apple to an orange segment.

And I agree with you, libertarian principles (as-well-as true modern conservative principles) are unachievable in our current culture.

What about "limited government" is unachievable? Both the establishment democrats and republicans are against limited government. That doesn't mean it is unachievable.

^ See what I mean… comparing political ideology to political party/parties.

The Cato Institute does the same thing… they label the Republican Party as conservative, then imply that the failures of the Republican party is the failure of conservative principles.

Try living in a world without police. I hate cops as much as the next guy, but without them, our weak and feeble would be no match for drug cartels, gangs and criminals. We also need some safety nets for people who are disabled or mentally incapable.

We need some goverment. Our founders knew this. They set up just left of anarchy. The liberal establishment has been taking us further to the left ever since.

My criticism of the libertarians has to do with strategy and being focused on the least important issues.

In a libertarian world, drug cartels would be either nonexistent or powerless because there would be no way to profit from the illegality of drugs.

This thread is full of "Libertarianism = Somalia" faildom so far.

Sure thing, and also I'm sure there would be no rape, murder or robberies. Everyone would be healthy and living in perfect harmony.

This is what I am talking about. This is also why the populist movement hasn't budged much since the days of Ross Perot.
