I would have thought ODU would bring a ton of fans given that they're only 2.5 hours away, they sellout their (small) stadium, and they have a waitlist for season tickets.

How do you guys think you'll look (attendance wise) for the Thursday night game against FAU this week?

ODU brought a decent crowd but nothing compared to ASU who is much further away than ODU. 45k is a disappointing opening night of Football no matter who the opponent and if it is Labor Day Weekend.
While ODU is farther away than the App campus, there are a lot of App graduates in Raleigh, which is less than an hour and a half from ECU. The whole in-state rivalry thing makes a difference too.

I bet more ODU fans would travel to play VT or VA than to ECU despite them being farther away just because they're in state rivals.

I though ODU would take more to ECU as well, but comparing them to App isn't exactly apples to apples.

We aren't rivals with App
Perhaps not, but they view you that way. You are big brother to them and you garner attention from their alums.

For the sake of comparison:
You to include the Rutgers & Louisville figures in the AAC column.

Clemson 83,830
Pittsburgh 65,500
Louisville 55,332
NC State 54,204

Wake Forest 26,202
Duke 22,521

Why do you include Tulane as an AAC school but exclude Louisville?

And Alabama garners attention with our alums, doesn't make us rivals. NC State is our only true rival.

With a little bit of success on the field Memphis will once again be in the mix for the conference attendance title.

UCF wasnt in the league then. That was Deangelo's Junior year. Same year as the 56-49 shootout with Louise on Thursday night.

My bad, but it didn't matter. They averaged 20k that year.

I think Memphis attendance will pick up quickly once they start winning. UCF will have solid attendance as will ECU, UC and others.

I was just saying I was surprised. This was ODU's first FBS game ever and a short drive for most of their fan base. Listening to their PR guy on Pirate Radio he made it sound like they would sell as many tickets as ECU would give them and then thousands more fans would snatch them up on the secondary market.
ASU is a completely different animal because there are a lot of families in North Carolina with ASU and ECU ties and that makes the game more attractive for a lot of people. A lot of Tidewater families have mixed ties to VT and ODU so I have no doubt they would have taken more fans to Blacksburg but then again ECU has taken 10k fans to Blacksburg before and that is just to see the Pirates play.

The most impressive fan bases to visit Ficklen are WVU, NCST, UNC and ASU.

That's because ECU has an exceptional group of fans.

Playing Towson on a Thursday night is not going to be attractive for fans in Connecticut looking forward to Giants & Patriots games this fall.

Our associate AD said we were on pace for 50k sold (by gametime) a few weeks ago. I haven't heard an update since then. We had 39k for FCS UT-Martin for the opener last year. I'm not callin 50k but I think we can do 45k with the excitement finally back in M-Town about Tiger football.

RE: Attendance for Week 1
ECU's fan base travels fairly well. They especially show up for big games on Saturdays... not so much for lesser games on Labor Day Saturdays or Thanksgiving Saturdays or a 7:30 PM Thursday night game with a less well known team. We would have most likely had 45,000 if we had played FAU on Saturday as originally planned, but will probably only have 35 - 40 thousand Thursday night. We have 6 of our 12 season ticket holders that will not be attending Thursday night due to children in school and couldn't get replacements with family for same reason. The 2 couples that sit behind us live too far to come for a Thursday night game... against FAU, but I am sure they would have been there for Va Tech. Game was changed to a Thursday night game from Saturday by the TV gurus. What would have been a great Saturday tailgate / game experience for the whole family now becomes a great tailgate/game experience for us older adults and the student body. A "Black-Out" with black unis and fans wearing black should be fun.

Probably....UCF will average a respectable 40k this season.

I think you will challenge ECU for the lead. 04-cheers

There is no reason they shouldn't IMO.

Expect ECU to start a fundraising drive for a new pressbox and suites on the South side pretty soon..bringing DFS to 60k. I could see this within the next 5 years. We should be back to capacity crowds next year in the AAC and that will spur the expansion talk again.
