Matthews called them the best team on JMU's schedule, but their defense is notoriously bad and they won all of one game a year ago, including a loss to lowly UMass, if I'm not mistaken. They've also got a boatload of transfers from BCS teams, as does a team like Towson (a very good team perhaps in large part because of that).
Akron, the best team on our schedule? Mickey must be smoking something. They were horrible. Our O-line pushed their D around all night. Our D was in their grills all night. I think we will see four or five teams better than Akron this year.

RE: On a positive note...
Observations from the game yesterday.
1. I thought the play of our lines was good. We were getting more pressure on defense than I had seen in a while, we put some hard hits on their QB, and they could not run the ball whatsoever up the middle. On offense, I thought we won the line of scrimmage on running plays, and decent job with pass blocking, in general Birdsong had a decent amount of time to work.
2. Thought we played hard and with a chip on our shoulder. Clearly we came in knowing we were better and pretty much proved it from a talent level, except for those big plays and undisciplined penalties.
3. Be thankful that you dont live in Akron. At a bar literally 100 yards across from the stadium and there were about 10 people before kickoff. No game day experience. Even if we are in the lowly CAA our game day experience and fan base is far above what Akron could dream of. Not sure how the rest of the MAC compares.
4. As disappointed in the outcome as we all are, I think that for the first time in a while the offense was exciting to watch. Even with the penalities that had is in sub optimal positions (1st, 2nd and 3rd in long) the offense kept moving the ball. Before we would get in a 2nd and long, and knew that the drive was over.
Look forward to the start of CAA play.
Go Dukes.

4 sacks by the defensive line is a positive. If JMU can get a lift when Tyler Snow returns to DE, then this will be a good year.
It is possible Birdsong had his best game that he will have this year statistically. That isn't necessarily a bad thing if the Dukes can run the ball even more effectively against FCS defenses.

Agree, but he was a little shaken, what would we do for a holder, if the next play was for a winning fg.

D Smith was a beast given the limited attempts to him..based on his size, we should target him much more - if nothing else, just to draw the double-teams.
