Towson 33 - UConn 18
NDSU 24 - Kansas State 21
Eastern Washington 49 - #25 Oregon State 46
McNeese State 53 - USF 21
Northern Iowa 28 - Iowa State 20
Eastern Illinois 40- San Diego St 19
These teams that won against FBS teams in week 1 are our peers. The only school I would concede an advantage to would be NDSU. And they all defeated schools far superior to the Akron Zips.
Seriously, we are playing a bottom 5 team in FBS ball ( excluding startup/ transition teams). We'll likely be playing in front of a non hostile environment w/ a crowd roughly the size of an away game at Towson or W&M. I'm not guaranteeing a win, just saying I'll be disappointed if we don't. A lot of us including myself say that joining the MAC is a lateral move. Sure, their top teams are better than us, but by no means should we expect defeat against a MAC bottom feeder. If we want to talk the talk, it's time to walk the walk.
Go Dukes!
Two things- as someone who closely followed an FBS transition team last year, Akron is in the bottom 5 even if you include them.
Also, as someone who followed the A-10/CAA from 2003-2011 and has seen one season in the MAC, football wise I'd say the MAC is better. UMass probably would have been a mediocre CAA team last year, middle of the pack. They were a crappy MAC team. That being said, the top of the CAA can definitely compete in the MAC. I don't know about for all sports, but football only it wouldn't be a lateral move.
I didn't see JMU play last year or this year and only saw Akron play one (game against UMass last year) but from what I remember, I'd bet on JMU in this game.
Oh, I agree the MAC is a better football conference than the CAA. They've got some very good teams up top. When I mention lateral move, I am only speaking from a JMU perspective and not purely from a football competitiveness standpoint. Does it make sense to move up to FBS and a new conference and lead it in attendance your first year? It's like buying shoes for your kid where their toes are already touching the ends.
My main point is that teams we've historically competed evenly with are knocking off these FBS teams. The FBS teams I listed were tier 2 and tier 3 ( if you divided up FBS into 4 levels). Akron would be a level 4 team right now ( though I do believe that Bowden will help right the ship). The quality FCS programs have knocked off some good FBS teams this year. If we think we are an FCS power, and lately that's been questionable, we need to have the mentality that we can do what our peers are doing. And because of our FBS opponent, our job should be measurably easier than what our peer programs had to deal with.

I predicted an L for us over the off-season, based purely on the fact that they're in the MAC.
But, just look at their schedule (and their 3 wins) over the past three years...we got this easy.

Huh? Are you serious? I don't care how bad they seem to be the last three years or so, they still have a huge depth advantage and are playing at home (and the Dukes generally struggle on the road).
I can't really take away much from the CCSU game other than our defensive line has trouble getting to the QB even against an FCS bottom feeder. Birdsong looked solid at times and lost at others (much like a 19 year old starting his 3rd game) and our O-line looked pretty good as well.
I would be surprised if we win and hold Akron to under 24 points.

Amen. True. Reality. MM told them they lose by 50 if they play Akron like they did CCSU. That was not hyperbolic coach-speak

This guy predicting 45-17 Akron. BS
I think it will be a close game and Akron has a game under their belt as well ad JMU. It is winnable, but we have to play well and know that we will win.

If we lose to Akron it will be a disaster. We need to go in there and throw them all over the field.

RE: JMU at Akron
Some of these posts are hilarious.
We can definitely beat Akron. But it will not be the "death" of anything if we lose. They're still an FBS school with more schollies, playing at home, and we'll be underdogs in Vegas. Take that for what it's worth, but let's temper the expectations a little.
We can win. We could win by double digits, I wouldn't be shocked. But I also would not be shocked or appalled if we lost by double digits. We're still breaking in an inexperienced QB in a brand new system. I'm afraid some of you are going to jump off a cliff if we don't win by 24+.

Hopefully we lose so that you no longer follow JMU football. I am willing to take a loss to an FBS if it means you go away. You have literally complained about everything at this point so what's keeping you here anyway?

Haha, I guess football season got me going. I really do believe we should beat Akron and we need to think that way. I don't think our team overlooks anybody but you have to go out there and take care of business against one of the worst FBS schools in the country. Losing to them would be a huge let down. I think JMU can run on them all day.

Akron is not void of talent. They have at least 11 players on their roster that have transferred from 1-A programs as Terry Bowden tries to build with renegades.
2 from Florida State
2 from Colorado State
1 from Colorado
1 from Ohio State
1 from Pittsburgh
1 from BYU
1 from Washington State
1 from Wisconsin
1 from Virginia Tech

That will get you a really bad football team. Taking peoples' mistakes is no way to get good.
