RE: new court design
Surely this mock cannot be the actual final design. It has the cohesiveness of a jigsaw puzzle in a tornado.

Thoughts from a professional designer:

-The "James Madison" signatures, "James Madison University" sideline text, and CAA logos face the same side of court. That would be fine if those were the only double elements, but it's an awful disruptive contrast with the giant Duke Dog heads facing their respective sides.
-The purple hues on the Duke Dog head logo don't even match the purple hues on the lettered logo and sidelines.
-Please, please tell me we're not going to have "JMUSPORTS.COM" written in unstyled Century Gothic text with a default drop shadow. A four-year-old could open up Photoshop with a blindfold on and make something more aesthetically pleasing.
-And speaking of the baselines, the longest point of the Duke Dog collar spike is not acceptable divide between that bold (see: awful) switch from purple to gold. Just keep the entire baseline/sidelines purple.

I sincerely hope this is a rough mock of the actual design. I can live with the concept of the design itself. Obviously you're going to have haters, but I think a louder design is a perfectly fine move to garner any bit of attention to our program. In the end, a loud design > bad design > unprofessional design. What we are being shown in it's current state is an unprofessional--and in my opinion completely unacceptable--design.

This is what I don't get. They asked for submissions. Yours was by far the best (even the guys on the team loved it) and they end up with this. What is the point on asking for submissions? It looks like a kindergarten drawing.

It would be better if they just took the two head logos off completely and put "James Madison" on the baseline and be done with it.

Exactly...it's just a basketball court. Sure it's not the best of the ones out there, but who really cares THIS much about a basketball court? The mood around here makes it seem like they just announced we'll be moving all home games to Memorial Hall or something. We have an exciting future for basketball at JMU for the first time in years and a football team with plenty of potential for sustained success over the next few years, and this is what we're whining about?? If there was ever an appropriate time for the saying "first world problems" this is it.

+1

Heck, not too many folks will see it anyway. 10 home men's games and poor attendance.

I'm sure that the people employed in the athletics department have read this thread and the facebook one. Can you really implement this court now? Just about nobody likes it.

I don't like it much either - just think your childish reactions to anything and everything that doesn't meet your approval is tiresome.

I don't know anything about designing anything, but this immediately jumped out at me. How can they orient stuff from both sides of the court to face one side, but then turn around and orient the two giant dog heads to each side?

RE: new court design
No offense intended to Pitz, but most people I know are just relieved that they didn't go with his more than anything. That's how I feel, and I don't understand the people that are so against all the crazy football uniforms(and any little change at all) but then like that court design. I'm not really happy with the one they went with, but I'm not pissed about it either. I would have liked to see something like the one that had the Virginia center court logo, but with a different logo in the center, preferably the same as what was there before or the Duke Dog on top of JMU. Like I said in my comment on the facebook picture, I think the court could have been a lot worse but it could have been a lot better too. I really don't get why they'd think it's a good idea to have the "JMUSPORTS.COM" and the whole way the purple and gold around the edge is. Also, like a lot of others have mentioned, it doesn't make sense to have the James Madison signature and everything facing the same way. I've seen plenty of courts that have everything facing the same way, but not when it's the same exact thing twice. Florida, for example, has a "Florida" and a "Gators" where those are and they're both facing the same way, but if it's two of the same thing then one should be flipped.

The overall design, with the two big Duke Dog heads and everything, is kinda 'meh' to me. Could be worse, could be better. A lot of kind of little things, though, seem like they didn't really put much thought in to them.

Agreed, I think it should either be all out everything faces the same way, or everything has one facing each side(except, of course, the center court logo).

It should either be like this:

Or like this:

Googling random teams' courts, it seems like now more go with the former. JMU went the other way with the main component of the design, then decided to go that way with everything else.

RE: new court design
Well, we basically got what we asked for on this one. JMU asked for this to be a social media contest. When it came down to the final round of 10, this floor concept won the vote with 344 likes. the next closest was 228, 200, and the rest had like 100 likes. So blame the voters guys. Majority wins.

Personally, i'm with Kickittoscotty - i'm not pissed about it but i think it looks absolutely terrible. Is it rational to rant and whine about it and say you're never going to another game until they change something? No. and FWIW i bought 2 mens and womens season tickets today for the first time ever - been going to games for 10 years just never under season tix in my name. It's about supporting the team and the university, not what ("improper") shades of purple they paint stuff... for me anyway.

Why do we care? Uh, I don't know, cuz we're on the JMU MESSAGE BOARDS?!?! Obviously the people here care about all things JMU sports a little more than the average person. Most of us probably give money to the school and we take a lot of pride in our university. To all of those "get over it, it's not a big deal, you just want to complain" people....this court looks childish, clown-like, Bush league is it advertizes our sports web page, and just plain tacky. F this court and F Bourne and F all things that have to do with just the Duke Dog head...hate that damn logo.

and just so we're clear, Bourne didn't make the call on the court. Not trying to defend him specifically, but it's not his fault.

I had never seen anything where there was a clear vote. I don't understand why they would do it on facebook and base it on likes. I bet most of those people have never watched a JMU basketball game. Why not put it on your website (which you're going to put on the court and is embarrassing) and see where the poll is? It as a complete bush league operation that ended up in slop. Just read through the FB comments. Hardly anyone actually wants this. It's just another example of our administration acting like it cares about its patrons when in really doesn't.

It's not a big deal but just don't put down this stupid looking court. Read through the comments on facebook. Nobody wants it.

This is one of the worst threads on these boards. It's pages of complaining because your opinion didn't match the majority of votes. It won convincingly on fbook and most JMU fans liked it.

Stephen Ravas Out of all the possibilities, this is the final design? Horrible. Who made this decision?

Drew Brittle It's alright because the dim, outdated lighting in the Convocation Center will drown out some of the tackiness of this "new and improved" court design.

Rob Neil this was my least favorite design of all of the submissions including the ones clearly submitted by kids. If the coaches like it then I can deal with it but this is absolutely terrible in my view.

Brandon James Trautman I was kinda waiting for you to come out and say this was a joke... Its good in theory, but just way too much going on. And the midcourt line of "James Madison University, James Madison, JMU, James Madison, James Madison University" is overkill
