OT - Rice Thresher: 2013-14 First Edition and New Changes
If you haven't had a chance to view the first edition of this year's The Rice Thresher, check it out:

http://www.ricethresher.org

And, if you are not aware, The Thresher has changed its production cycle such that the paper will be published on Wednesdays rather than Fridays. Soon, the students will be unveiling a new website - should be coming in the next couple of weeks. The new site will allow reporting of news in a more timely fashion as well as provide better photography and video coverage.

RE: OT - Rice Thresher: 2013-14 First Edition and New Changes
No more Whursdays?!?! Kids have it easy these days. Overall, I think this might be better, especially for football/weekend athletic events coverage. With a Friday release date, it was always tough to write informative articles about a football game that had happened 6 days prior, and when the next one was just a day away. The head editor started to push me to have the sports writers incorporate more balanced "recap/preview allotment" into the writing, which I predict will be a more effective writing style with a mid-week release. You'll get your recap of your weekend sporting events that weren't that long ago, and have a preview to digest over the next few days.

My understanding is that an important driver of moving the publication date to Wednesdays was revenue: advertisers will pay more for ads that run on Wednesday than for ads that run on Friday.

Which strikes me as a good old-fashioned example of what it REALLY means to run a newspaper.

And a key reason for so much of the AP style guide.

I've never been a fan of the Thresher's online presence, so any improvements are welcome, in my book. Compare the Thresher's website to almost any other major university's, and the former looks like amateur hour.

I'm curious as to when this new Rice Thresher website will roll out. The current website, as is the norm, is at least a week behind, and its appearance leaves a lot to be desired.
