WSJ's Grid of Shame
Where does your school's team rank? http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424...nteractive

OSU - embarrassing powerhouse
UCF - embarrassing powerhouse (same level of embarrassing as OSU, but less of a powerhouse)

Clemson and Stanford are considered the most admirable powerhouses

FIU is considered the most embarrassing weakling

UC gets hit due to student fees... no off the field issues and I believe the APR is above average.

What makes Tulane suddenly so embarrassing? They should be an admirable weakling, like they were in 2012.

Clemson grad maybe? Having Notre Dame that low because of a fake girlfriend makes the list look silly. Unless there are a lot of recent arrests that haven't been publicized, Notre Dame ranks high on everything other than the fake girlfriend "ick" factor.

I like where my team is, but Indiana is considered an admirable football powerhouse? Sort of deflates my sails.

RE: WSJ's Grid of Shame
I guess everyone would want to be an admirable powerhouse, but if you had to choose between embarrassing powerhouse or admirable weakling, which would you choose?

I am guessing Alabama would rather be an embarrassing powerhouse because they are THE POWERHOUSE.

Interesting that Iowa is high on the admirable scale since I saw another report a couple years back that it lead the college football nation in arrests. But I don't know, maybe that is a good thing. In Iowa they actually arrest the football players when they break the law. Plus Iowa's new reputation as #1 party (drinking) school is probably going to lead to even more of a crackdown by police.

But maybe everyone realizes that 99% of the arrests are public drunkenness (misdemeanors) type offenses that many college students get when they are young. Which is still embarrassing but not the same thing as being arrested for felonies.

UConn was an admirable/powerhouse under Edsall. We've taken a step back with Pasqualoni.

And how is SMU not more admirable? They've fought back (slowly) from the death penalty with hard work and integrity. It's a good story.

How is UF considered admirable? They have loads of players arrested every year.

RE: WSJ's Grid of Shame
I guess that ND is ranked where they are because of T'eo?

Because looking at their other "factors":

ND is tops in APR, has no substantive history of major violations, none of its athletic department costs are subsidized by student fees and ND had no arrests in the offseason this year.

But, subjectively, the WSJ puts ND's "ick" factor off-the-charts, putting the Irish next to PSU and USC? Lol, ok...

Yes, I don't understand ND's placement at all. ND has the Teo problem and they were embarrassed in the NC game, but those are temporary situations ... I wouldn't mark down ND because of that. Overall, ND is an admirable institution (and I'm no fan of ND).

This chart must be just a small snapshot in time; it's not looking at the long-term situation. Even if my schools were in the bottom-left quadrant (and they're not), I wouldn't get too upset about this.

I cant be too upset where the Owls are positioned. This season has the makings of a tough one, but at least they are solidly near the top of the admirable scale. If they can remain there and nudge toward the center line more i would be happy.

Definitely need to switch ND and UF's placements.

Tell me about it. IU got a better rating than Iowa on both accounts. Iowa got a high admirable rating but Indiana's was slightly higher and Indiana getting a higher powerhouse rating? 03-nutkick

That is not what admirable means in this. What you are talking about is the other scale for this grid.

Top 10 in the polls
Top 5 in the APR
No players arrested in over a year.
Under Dabo Swinney the only players who did not graduate left school early for the NFL.
