RE: Obligatory NCAA wrist slap - Manziel suspended for 1st half of Rice game
The overall strategy by all parties was to keep this fracas from winding up in some courtroom where testimony is under oath and lies are punishable by fines &/or jail time. By shutting the issue down like this, no one can claim injury (tort) and take anyone to court. If the main objective by someone was to create some level of preseason disruption of the A&M team, it may have done all that as desired. Who would profit by that outcome?

No, no....this is good. Now Manziel can spend the first half signing autographs and getting paid for it and then step in and play starting 3rd qtr.

I hope Rice kicks their ass.
Then I hope Manziel beats Tuscaloosa again.

Professional Student League
-Salary, insurance, and benefits of a full-time employee
-Freedom to make extra earnings from promotions, performance, marketing
-Run by external, private branch of the school's athletic department that will be subject to taxes and all other business & employment laws
NCAA League
-Scholarships and room/board with small, monthly supplement based on uniform policy across all participating schools
-Conforms to all current NCAA rules and regulations to maintain amatuer status for all athletes
They already have this: the Big 6 (Professional Student League)... then everyone else (NCAA League).

Some players were suspended for a few games.
I would consider that a lesser offense as well. The issue is there was no proof/admission in this case.

My obligatory "what the hell are you talking about?"
"Fines and jail time"???? No crimes have been committed. Nothing is going to a courtroom.
MB, sometimes, I'm amazed you even stop there. Your restraint is to be admired.

What IF courts operated like the NCAA - You tell us your story and we will either believe you - or not. Telling a lie is not an offense we can punish (unless you admit it - see Bruce Pearl) so perhaps we will flip a coin to decide guilt or innocence.
Apparently you decided to reply without reading what I said - going to court changes the rules about telling ones story. As you know, PERJURY is indeed a FELONY which is not something the NCAA wants risk to get into in this case. What IF in telling "the WHOLE TRUTH", the brokers admit that a Longhorn booster (or an opponent's boosters) paid him to make these charges in order to upset the Aggie team before their second SEC season? That possibility is one the NCAA would rather not have to confront.
