I have always wondered who at UAT made the agreement to play a football game in Lafayette, and why. 1990 was Gene Stallings' first season as HC, so I doubt that he, personally, had anything to do with it.
At any rate, Tulane had Alabama in the Superdome in 1992 and Texas there in 2002. Got about 55,000 both times.

Steve Sloan was the ad at bama who put that deal together. He was also fired over it.

Did Sloan have a close friend in the Southwestern athletic department?
I suppose he must have, what else could've explained such a peculiar decision?

The same as if So. Alabama or Alabama-Birmingham came to town. A sell out.

Sellout just based on the fact that it's an SEC team playing above the Mason-Dixon line, that's a once in a lifetime moment there....

True. Funny how Southern California can play a 9-game conference schedule, play Notre Dame, and still visit Boston College in 2014... but most SEC teams "can't afford" a home & home a team like BC.
Can't afford the revenue loss (from their $100 million or so)? Or can't afford risking a loss?

Alabama played @Penn State in 2011, and did so 5 times in the 1980s.

They can't afford risking a loss?
To BC?
I hope you're not talking about the last couple of years because BC would have their hands full with anybody in the SEC and that does include their bottom feeders.

In all the years they have been playing football, Southern Cal has played:
@Fresno State - never
@San Diego State - once
@San Jose State - never
@Nevada - never
@UNLV - never
@Arizona - once (1916) prior to being in the same conference
@Arizona State - never until being in the same conference
@Utah - twice (1915 and 1917) prior to being in the same conference
@Utah State - never
@BYU - once
@Idaho - once (1925)
@Boise State - never
Historically, SEC teams have been just as willing to play OOC games on the road as non-SEC teams.

I was only 6 at that time the 1990 game was played, so I don't know who was involved in making the game happen.
What I do know is that we went to Bama 3 years in a row (1987-1989). Brian Mitchell and the Cajuns nearly pulled off the upset in Tuscaloosa in 1989 (lost 24-17). With Mitchell and a good number of players coming back in 1990 and Bama knowing that they had already agreed to come here, they offered more than the contractual buy out, but our AD turned it down since the visit was a once in a lifetime game. Bama won the 1990 game 25-6.

I haven't read through the thread, but if there is any answer other than "Sold Out", it does not bode well for your football situation.
