Exclamation The no-huddle craze: College football defenses play catch-up...

How do you defend no-huddle?

There's an extremely valuable player in college football these days. His position name may differ at each school from nickel back to strong safety to star to outside linebacker -- this assumes he even exists on some defenses -- but his attributes are similar.

He stands about 6-foot-1, 210 pounds. He can run, defend in space, play man coverage and blitz.

If the defense is allowed to substitute whenever the offense substitutes, I think this would become a non-issue.

I love the frenetic pace. Like Malzahn said, most teams snap the ball about 60 times a game. I want to snap it 90. I figure if I can do that, I should have more points.

He's been generally right.

Sometimes they even give Tennessee enough time to get 14 players on the field.

I'm excited about the uptempo stuff. Maybe it will lead to smaller players in college football. Linemen used to be athletes. Now they're just huge. No wonder they all get tired and hurt.

I think there is pressure for kids to get huge in order to get recruited and get playing time in college. I would love for that trend to be reversed and have linemen go back to only being 250 pounds. It's healthier for the athletes, and I don't think the game would suffer in terms of entertainment value.

Its also difficult to get the 300lb linemen once the cartel schools are done(they load up on 'em). But, like in basketball, where there are always good guards available, there are always the 6'1", 200lb DB/WR available that can be very useful in the proper scheme. That's what UAB is doing on defense...

The defense is allowed to substitute any time the offense substitutes.

The time lag for defense is from substituting according to the offense's personnel brought in each time. The "D" substitutions are often predicated on the offensive alignment in a particular setup. What the speed up on offense is all about appears to be catching the defense with the wrong players on the field for what the "O" might run on that play.

Most often, it's used to run the D ragged then catch them trying to sub for fresher players. As a former OL, I could run 5-10yrd sprints all day long w/ just the few seconds between plays needed to get into formation after play call & not get tired but when I moved over to LB, I'd get winded after running a few 10-20yrd plays in a row playing chase.
