Battle of the marching bands - NCAA poll
http://www.ncaa.com/news/football/articl...ttle-bands

A few interesting videos to kill the time left before the season starts.

Spoilers: Anyone who likes a couple of good jabs about rival teams will enjoy Michigan's show. Ohio state also made a horse that walked down the field. Pretty awesome. A&M had a classic show and the rest were all solid.

Overall I think Michigan's is the most entertaining. Anyone else?

Flip a coin between the two HBCUs. Just about any band from the MEAC and/or SWAC is better than anything in FBS

They are definitely the most hyped up. Which is the point of the band in the first place.

RE: Battle of the marching bands - NCAA poll
if I may make a homer pick, I believe the Ohio University Marching 110 had the best halftime show in 2012. They certainly had the most popular one. The video of their performance of Gangnam Style currently has 4.7m views on youtube. (the count was reset at 5.2m, the actual total is 9.9.m)

Psy, the original artist, dubbed the performance his favorite cover version. Clips of the performance were shown on newscasts globally, it was featured on the Today show, in a Google commercial and was so popular in Europe the band traveled to Ireland and Italy this spring to perform it, including a performance outside the Vatican.

They did pretty well in 2011 too, their performance of Party Rock Anthem currently has 9.6m views on Youtube.

The Marching 110 regularly gets standing ovations as the visiting band (seen here- @Tenn, @Marshall) and lives up to their motto "The Most Exciting Band in the Land".

My homer pick is the most popular marching band on the internet, the Ohio University Marching 110.

The All-American Marching Band at Purdue is one of my favorites. Last year they honored Neil Armstrong (a former member of the AAMB) in the coolest patriotic show I've ever seen. Unfortunately only half of it made it to youtube:

Call me crazy, but I'm a sucker for patriotic displays. They also start off every game with a short bit called "I am an American," which ends with the whole crowd saying that line. Good stuff.

Fact.

Only Rice's MOB is remotely as entertaining, though it's not about the music as much as the humor.

That's the equivalent of asking which is better, rock or rap. For sheer stadium entertainment, I'd probably agree with you. But if you're judging by musical talent, there are many FBS schools that could give some HBCU's a run for there money.

Two FBS bands that are heavily influenced by HBCU's are Auburn and LSU.

Neck - Southern Univ

Neck - LSU

Auburn Herd Tuba's - Sonic Boom

I hate to say it, but I agree. The MUMB in Oxford is decent, but not really on a national scale.

However, none of these college bands can really compete with what DCI has to offer; if you really want to see some fantastic marching, watch that.

RE: Battle of the marching bands - NCAA poll
I have coached football and baseball for almost 15 years now between recreational leagues, travel ball (baseball) and as a volunteer assistant for several high schools in low income areas around here. I have been to colleges all over the Southeast from NAIA to FBS with kids on recruiting trips with kids. The absolute highlight of all these trips has to be the bands at the HBCUs. It's not just the pregame, halftime show, and post-game shows.....they bring the energy the ENTIRE game. We were on a trip to a DII school once and the people next to us struck up a conversation, primarily because they wanted to know what drew me as a white man to the game. I explained why I was officially there, but told them I secretly volunteered for the HBCU games just to see the bands, that the football was just icing on the cake. Turns out they were band parents who bought season tickets because of their daughter. They talked about how competitive it was to get a spot in a band that was bigger than some FBS schools, and how it required year round practice to keep your spot once it was earned.

They might take the back seat to some outfits when it comes to pure musical ability, but I promise you the HBCU bands do not take a back seat to anybody when it comes to entertainment and atmosphere.

Stanford's band is a MOB wannabe! I read an article many years ago that described how the MOB barely escaping the violent wrath of Aggie fans after performing a halftime show in College Station. According to the article, MOB members were literally in danger of being beaten by The Nerd Army after performing a show that sounded funny as @#%$!

Watching the Southern band was both great and sad. I bet 75% of the female members have diabetes or will develop diabetes in a few years. Depressing.

Rutgers has had a MEAC school on our schedule for the past 6-7 years. The Howard band was great and I hope Norfolk State brings their band next weekend.

Grambling is playing at Cal in a couple of years. Looking forward to it. I think Grambling actually promises in the game contract to bring their band.
