Quote:Raiders waived WR Sam McGuffie, C Andrew Robiskie, DB Cory Nelms, DT Myles Wade, WR Tray Session, FB Jon Hoese, RB Deonte Williams, and LB Eric Harper.

These are the Raiders' first cuts. Once a monster recruit at Michigan, McGuffie turned in a disappointing college career after transferring to Rice. He made no waves in training camp, but could perhaps have a future in the CFL.

RE: Raiders waive Sam McGuffie
It really was not a disappointed career at Rice, but it was not as great as he had been projected as a recruit.

Good to hear some other teams express interest.

Question: Do guys who bounce around the league like this make decent money?

It's $6k per week (minimum) if you're on the practice squad. If on the regular roster, I'm seeing minimum rookie base salary is just over $400k annually.

Note that 400k minimum is for the entire season; if a player is only on the NFL roster for part of a season it's prorated.

So if a player is on a practice squad for half of the season (9 weeks), they're making a pretty good starting salary for an undergrad.

But it's only paid each week of the season. There is also salary associated when at official camps, but otherwise you're not paid in the off-season. You gotta be good at budgeting and saving - I believe even the regular salary is only paid during the 17 weeks of the season, though bonuses can be scheduled for different times.

Yes, you have to be good at not blowing it all each week. But I'm pretty sure $54,000 per year is more than the average first year salary for undergraduates.

It's also not exactly a smooth career path from there for most. Once you've had your 2-3 years on the practice squad, you're starting over in a new career and new salary path.

I assume being on an NFL practice squad, even if you never make the roster, pays better than being in the CFL?

Yes. And you don't have to learn the nuances of the game up there.

The New England Patriots have signed running back Sam McGuffie to the practice squad. Hopefully, this will be a long relationship

I would like to see the Pats make a trade for Casey. He's 3rd string in Philly, after starting the season injured and New England needs TE's and I think Thor would absolutely shine with Brady and that scheme.

I second. Thor and Gronk lining up would be pretty sweet

I wonder if he could hope to fill a Welker role.
