I'm not reading into anything. Memphis may have been down in football the past few years but that's about to change. The atmosphere of Tiger football is at an all time high by the locals. All of the newly renovated suites at the Liberty Bowl Stadium (which has also been renovated) are sold out for the season. It's been pointed out by the doubters and even critics that there's a buzz around the football program for the first time in years.
Now, why would Memphis be on that list, which is most likely a short one at that?
- SEC territory
- Top 50 US market and a great recruiting market
- A major university of 20,000 students enrolled that is expected to grow to 21,000 by 2014
- A passionate fanbase (at least in basketball, but could also be in football)
- A major bowl tie-in (should Memphis be included) with the Liberty Bowl
- A growing academic and athletic endowment
You're missing my point completely. Those are all valid reasons, but the article didn't say THE team on the list they said A team on the list. The list is not defined, so it is only right to assume that there is more than one team on that list, probably a great deal many more than one.
Well I can only think of five probable schools on the list.
BYU (won't happen)
UCF
USF
Cinncinnati
Memphis

GU, VU, UCONN, Marquette, and Saint John's). The BIG EAST could then have a mini challenge with the B1G, and the B1G could then have a mini challenge with the SEC. The Pac-12 and the Big XII could then have a challenge and the MWC and the AAC could have a challenge.
I see where you're going with this, but I find it a bit "challenging."

They can't even get into the AAC. TV apparently wasn't interested in MAC schools. But in fairness, the Big East/AAC leadership haven't struck anyone as being particularly adept.

Top of the list USF,UCF (tv extra funds)
Second group (byu turned it down once and UCINN)
Third group (houston,memphis)
Things change if UT and OU leave for B10.All 6 above will join.

Translation:
The Big XII isn't expanding but let's just ask if Memphis would ever be considered as a candidate if they decided to go past 10 members.
How can we spin this?
Breaking News!!!!
"Big XII commissioner says Memphis on list of expansion candidates."

And memphis is certainly not joining the B12.
The best they can hope is that the best of the mwc merge with the best of the aac.

Memphis is a strong basketball program, however, most know that your football program is still a bottom feeder.

Pay no attention to folks that stick their heads in the sand and act as if such mannerisms give their opinion the same value as fact.
The fact is that Oklahoma and Texas both have done a lot of talking with other conferences. They both have displayed some inkling that there might be better pastures to graze in. For someone to just write a one liner that movement will not happen....that is not an opinion to put much weight on.
You are right, in my opinion, Memphis's best option is that this new division happens and that they get in on it with the mid-major conference that is able to put together a strong enough group of schools in order to meet the standards of that new division.
I think you are right that it will be the AAC that is chosen and that some schools from the MWC will join it.
