RE: Champlin: Fieldhouse, Turf, among greatest needs
I've never had a bad experience there. It's not really on the verge of falling over, everything works for the most part, the actual front entrance, which I had never used until homecoming last year, is pretty cool looking, it's kinda spooky at night, no obstructed sightlines, plenty of bathrooms, the concession stands don't get overwhelmed too often with our crowds, plenty of really convenient parking, no one has been shot or stabbed recently, the sound system and club seating are nice and new, the bleachers are pretty clean and in good repair, it doesn't smell bad, the shrubbery and flowers around the venue are pretty well maintained, plenty of entrances and exits with no lines, easy loading and unloading logistics for the band and cheerleaders, you can sit pretty much anywhere, you can sneak food and booze in and no one notices or cares, if you need a little exercise you can run stadiums during pregame and halftime, cell phone reception is okay, the turf is pretty good, who wants to take a hot shower after a football game anyway, the Papa John's pizza thingers are pretty awesome, you can play basketball, football, or hide and seek in the parking lot...

There are plenty of positives/ neutral attributes in my opinion. Maybe I just have a high tolerance for mediocrity and inconvenience. Maybe I've just decided to be okay with it because it feels better than being unhappy and negative about it. But I think we have much, much more important business to take care of with our facilities than the stadium. I want it so badly, but wanting something you can't have is not very productive.

Maybe if we get our attendance up, Birmingham will be able to afford Nexcare bandages instead of the store-brand ones they're using right now.

This might be something we can actually get accomplished and in a reasonable period of time. Also as previously mentioned, it could make the stadium proposal cheaper if we do a lot of the site work and fieldhouse component first.

And how long that will be depends in part on us. Hopefully McGee and company will get some positive energy flowing this fall and get the attendance rising at Legion Field....

There is supposed to be an opportunity as part of the capital campaign to direct funds for specific projects, correct? As in not just even to a certain department, but to a certain project a la the fieldhouse? Anyone know yet about this?
+1 IT IS OUR CHOICE

A lot of posters think that now we have "permission" by the BOT to build a field house and new practice field that they are on the way. Actually under our new president and the new UAB entrepreneur spirit and return on investments strategy. We will have to fund raise the money as part of the new capital campaign.

If we want these facilities we will need to get off our butts and invest by a PLEDGE. By the way if you prefer to wait for an OCS to give - I understand why you feel that way. But IMHO if athletic part of the capital campaign fails - this president may not take another risk with the BOT on future fundraising for an OCS.

I tend to agree. We need to couch it in terms of fundraising for UAB in general, as good for the city, county, and state, and actually do that, but we also need to put our money and our fundraising efforts where our desire for that OCS is.
