Texas and Texas A&M are now on the top of each other's list. Along with thier old SWC pals.
Goofus,
Carolina and South Carolina played 16 times as ACC conference mates. That means that 40 of the 56 games played were OOC games (in terms of today's conferences).
40 OOC games would still place South Carolina at the top of our most played OOC opponent.
How many UNC v USC games were SoCon games, not OOC games?

Perhaps you wouldn't mind looking that up for those that want to know.

RE: Your teams most popular OOC opponents
For Texas, the most played teams out of conference
1. Oklahoma (from the 20s-90s) approx. 75 of 107 games
2. Southwestern 22 (a couple were when they were SWC members-last game 1945)
3. Tulane 19
4. LSU 17
5. Missouri 14 of 23 games ooc
6. Vanderbilt 12 (last played 1928)
7. Haskell 11 (last played 1911)
8. Notre Dame 10
9. Alabama 9
9. North Carolina 9
9. North Texas 9
9. Dallas U 9 (last played 1899)
The following teams are no longer in conference, but nearly all games were in conference:
Texas A&M 118
Rice 93
Arkansas 77
SMU 73
Houston 25
Missouri 23*listed above
Colorado 18
Nebraska 14
Texas has only played KSU, KU and ISU 13, 12 and 10 times, respectively.

If #7 on your list is Haskell Indian College in Lawrence, it's ironic that you've only played KU one more time than you've played Haskell, even though it's obviously been a long time.

Yeh, it's exciting to have ND and PSU on our future schedules. Those are two teams VT fans have always wanted to play.
I added some more to your list for my own curiosity.
I just hope Beamer hangs around long enough for the game. Thanks for the add on's.
How come Notre Dame never plays Iowa anymore? Oh yeah, there was a big controversy in the 50's and the teams never played. again

That's the problem with this thread. Starting next year, the most common OOC game for my school, App State, by standard used will be Western Carolina with 78 meetings. Some of them were OOC games as App moved the SoCon earlier than WCU, and all future meetings after this year's will be OOC, but most were conference games. It's easy to sort that one out but much harder when the moves were further in that past or more frequent - such as for a school like VT where they were independent at the start of the century then they joined the SoCon (then while they were there first the SEC then later the ACC split off) then they were independent then the Big East then the ACC, while opponents were doing other moves. What was the alignment when each game was played? Who would want to sort that all out? Nobody.

Well the thread was about OOC opponents now. It never stipulated whether the games were ooc at the time. I'd just treat it as a listing of teams played more than 10 times. That is really the jist of it anyway. Who have you played in the past that isn't in your current conference?

BTW, 'lil carolina and Carolina were in the Southern Conference together for 31 years. The Heels played the chickens 18 times diring that stretch of time. That still leaves 22 games played when not in the same conference.

It's interesting how the notion of conferences have changed. When the conferences were starting to grow to 12+ teams awhile back I remember people bemoaning the fact that teams would no longer be playing every other team in the conference. But that is more the historical norm. West Virginia has a bunch of SoCon championships from after the ACC schools left even though in many of those seasons they only played 4 or 5 conference games and played mostly an OOC schedule, while never playing some of the SoCon teams. For example, they were in the same conference as Furman for something like 40 years and never played them even once, while playing non-conference Pitt every year during the same period. It wouldn't surprise me if things went back to a setup like that in the future where many teams are in a conference together but never play each other.
