Dukes Football Practice
Does anyone know if the football team is practicing this Sat 8/24? If so, where/when, and is it open to the public?

I appreciate anyone that has info. Asked a few JMU reps over the weekend but did not get a response.

To my knowledge they do not do two a day practices.Maybe there is limit to the number of practices allowed , like they do in the spring.

I thought they stopped doing that a few years back due to the high volume of injuries. There was an article about it as well in DNR (or I may have dreamt that up).

I recall that as well. Happened around the same time VT stopped two a days as well, i believe.

Mickey experimented with it a couple of years ago as a way to reduce injuries and it seems to have worked. Sometimes we and coaches do things simply because that is the way they have always been done. Kudos to MM for trying the change. Keep the kids fresh. No need to beat each other to death before the season starts.

JMU was doing 2 a days 04'-08'. Seemed to work then. Whatever has been doing the last few years hasn't seemed to work...

Yeah, losing a good amount of talent and depth to an in-state start up doesn't usually help either.

In 2011 they still had two-a-days but the second practice was more of a walkthrough as opposed to a full practice. So they were still getting the mental repetitions just without the risk of injury. That was the year we went to North Dakota in the playoff. So there is some success there.

That second practice isn't advertised because frankly it wasn't very exciting to watch.

I really don't think there is any correlation between doing 2 a days and being good. Talent, health and coaching generally trumps all.

We always have solid talent, but have been lacking in the health and coaching department these past few seasons.

Two a days are a relic of a by-gone era. They are a hold over from a time when guys used to show up to camp out of shape and it was all about whipping them back in to shape as quickly as possible. Now, most players show up in pretty good shape and only need that last push to get in to game shape. If you had a team that was way off the mark however, I see where it could be useful. Heck, it could be useful just as a threat for why you should come in to camp in shape!

The only thing I'm wondering about holding players out, goes back to an article I read recently, I think on ESPN, says that ligament tears are more likely for players being rested too much.

RE: Dukes Football Practice
If it is similar to what the HS can or are doing these days it is more a formula of practice "sessions". Not necessarily days. So you can have 2 a days, and occupy fewer calendar days or spread them out for a looooong time over darn near the entire month of August.

There has also been a pretty significant loosening of the number of "practices" (All voluntary, of course... unless you actually want to play) or "Team building exercises that can be done over the entire Summer, except the quiet period. 7 on 7 scrimmages, weight training, cardio etc etc.

RE: Dukes Football Practice
In high school, I hated 2 a days. Had to put on a wet uniform for the second go around. We were a small school and didn't have laundry facilities. Locker room would get pretty ripe after a couple of weeks of nasty unis hanging. I lived 6 miles from the school and would bike to and from practices, often in the dark going home. Would usually try to wash and dry my uniform at home between practices. The good old days.
