The OP is obviously not-serious, but I appreciate the effort.

The above conference has 17 teams (all the others have 16, I think).

Tulane football could not survive in the above-configuration. We would just have to drop down to Division II or III (FCS is also non-viable for us) or scrap it once and for all, and try to join the A-10 or something like that for Oly-sports.

Lol, because Tulane football has been thriving for the past 15 years.

So how does Tulane survive in the actual American conference....

any play off scenario should only involve conference champions. Sorry SEC teams, if you can't win your division and you can't win your conference then you don't deserve to play for a national title. If you don't like it you can either figure out a way to win or move to the Sun Belt and dominate.

Here's the fix-

8 team tournament. 10 conferences send 10 conference champions,1-6 automatically in, the champs for the bottom 4 conferences play a play-in game to determine which two get last 2 spots. done.

Amen to that, and a good CFP idea as well. Had this been put into place last year (ignoring Utah State just because WAC football is now dead), here is what we would've seen:

1. Notre Dame
8/9. Louisville vs. Wisconsin winner
vs.
3. K-State
6. NIU

2. Alabama
6/10. Boise State vs. Tulsa winner
vs.
4. Stanford
5. Florida State

Arkansas State would've been shut out because of Notre Dame.

The OPer lost me when he had ND in a conference. It's been said by a few others that ND would NEVER join a conf and none of the other conferences WANT them to. As a work of fiction, it needs a lot more work to get me to buy it.

Greater media-coverage, greater ability to recruit on a national basis, more appealing schedules...
