Why did UCF change from Golden Knights to Knights?
I honestly thought it was a pretty cool name. Especially when you have the Black Knights (Army) and the Scarlet Knights (Rutgers).

I called UCF the Golden Knights until 2008 or so.

But still, why was the name change?

Have you seen the price of gold lately? It's just too damn expensive staying Golden. Especially in this economy.

We were the "Fighting Knights" when I attended. I hated the move to "Golden Knights." However, I now support the abbreviated "Knights." It is just part of the branding plan (similar to wanting to be "UCF" rather than "Central Florida").

But still, why was the name change?

Everything really coincided with the OCS, and new Arena. Here is an article from back in 2007 detailing it out.

Link

"First, UCF never promoted its teams as the Golden Knights until Steve Sloan took over as athletic director in 1993. Prior to that, the school moniker was the Knights.

Second, uniforms for each of the school's athletic teams were, well, not uniform. Some teams stitched "Knights" across their chest, while others referred to themselves as Golden Knights. Sometimes the knight logo with the lance was used; other times the jerseys were emblazoned with just the knight's helmet.

Third, regional and national attention will focus on the university and its athletic teams this fall when the Knights host the University of Texas in a new on-campus stadium in front of a national television audience. Later that fall, UCF men's and women's teams will hit the court in a new arena. "

We have been just the "UCF Knights" (formerly FTU Knights) for most of our history. Our dumb-ass AD in 1993 changed it to "Golden Knights". We were the "Golden Knights" from 1993 through the 2006/2007 athletic year. Starting in 2007 we went back to just being Knights.

UCF was never officially the "Fighting Knights", but the football team was frequently referred to as the Fighting Knights. Similarly, the basketball team was often referred to as the "Running Knights" and the baseball team was the "Diamond Knights". All were just nicknames and not the official names of the teams. The school's official mascot was always the UCF Knights until Steve Sloan changed it to the UCF Golden Knights in 1993.

RE: Why did UCF change from Golden Knights to Knights?
We changed to Knights to mainstream things. "Golden" seemed like it was a lower class, knock off.

It also coincided with logo changes and On-Campus Stadium opening.

It was kind of a way to symbolize we are serious about this program and this brand. Leadership was really pushing to make this a top program and investing in new facilities and top coaches. The Knights re-branding symbolized the realization of that.

We also had a Student Boom, making us one of the Largest Universities in the nation. Re-branding helped introduce us to this demographic and build a new younger fan base.

RE: Why did UCF change from Golden Knights to Knights?
I love my school because of the experiences I had there, but I'm not crazy about our name or mascot. We're the only FBS school in Florida whose mascot has absolutely nothing to do with the state of Florida.

We were originally the Florida Tech Citronaughts. While the Citronaught is kind of dumb looking, at least it was unique. If I could re-write history I would have kept the Florida Tech name and chosen the Conquistador as our mascot. It's still kind of like a Knight, but it would be unique and would draw on Florida's history as a Spanish colony.

I went to high school in Key West. We were the Fighting Conchs. I always loved that mascot and it's very appropriate for a school in the Keys.

True to some extent, but the program did market themselves as the Fighting Knights. Lots of print media referred the us as the Fighting Knights during this time. Its hard to call it a nickname when you print the name on your media guides as your name.

I liked Golden Knights better than Knights, as the latter sounds generic.

Similarly, when I first attended USF, we were the Golden Brahmins. Loved that name, and still regret that we switched to the generic Bulls. 07-coffee3

Blame the student contest in the early 70s. The other top pick was to become the Vultures. That would have been weird.

After Gators, Seminoles and Hurricanes... not a whole lot left to identify with as a State program.

What do Bulls have to do with "South" Florida in Tampa, Fla?

Panthers is another one that could have been used. NHL hockey team uses it, FIU and FIT both use it as well. So that's over played.

FAU's owl, I was once told is a reference to the burrowing owl which is indigenous to Florida. So... kinda gay but I guess that works.

UNF uses an Osprey.... which is kinda funny
[Image: UNF+Ospreys.jpg]

Worst State mascot IMO goes to the UWF Argonauts (which is kind of a play on Citronauts)

State linkage is kind of moot after a certain point.

My personal opinion would have been to keep the Florida Tech name and become...
Florida Tech Titans

http://www.ucfathletics.com/trads/name-logo.html

Quote:Part Five: Hail to the Fighting Knights
UCF football began in 1979 playing at the NCAA Division III level. Regardless of the class, it had no reflection on how tough a brand of college football that UCF was playing. The men's basketball team was coming off an appearance in the NCAA Division II Final Four and was regarded as a pretty relentless group as well.Supporters of the athletics program for some time had likened the Knights' style of play to a team that could put up a strong fight anywhere or anytime. That the school's athletics swagger had also led to the era of the "Fighting Knights". References to the athletic program, from the pocket schedule cards to the annual media guides, were as the "Fighting Knights". UCF's official logo took a change during this time, too, displaying a round logo that featured a Knight atop a kicking horse, with the verbiage "Fighting Knights" running underneath. .........

Not sure I agree with that. There are lots of things I think of when I think of Florida

Oranges
Sunshine
Swamps
Flamingos
Palm Trees
Manatees
Pelicans
Cape Canaveral / Space Program
Old people

Now whether any of those would make a good mascot / team name is an entirely different story. 04-cheers

The Argonaughts come from Greek mythology, while the Citronaught was supposed to be a combination of an Orange (paying homage to the citrus industry) and an Astronaut (paying homage to the space industry).

I still like my Conquistador idea. It's the same medieval warrior theme as the Knights but with a Spanish flair. Florida was first colonized by Conquistadors so it would make sense historically.

I could see a salty deep sea fisherman for a mascot too.
