Knights are suppose to be "too mean."

Also, the longer name and the very "busy" logo (seen below) was almost impossible to produce in small images which made getting any merchandise made almost impossible.

The old logo/name was so "busy" (especially in a small image for golf shirts, hats, etc...), merchandisers would just take off the word Golden, and this logo was common, even though our official name after 93 was the Golden Knights:

A good graphic designer could have resolved this concern.

Using gold in the logo eliminates having to include the word “Golden” or make the word smaller.

Now that UCF is a much larger institution and has moved up from the Div I-AA ranks like it was back in 1993, one of the best decisions UCF's former AD Keith Tribble ever made was to rebrand UCF, reclaim the KNIGHTS nickname, and come up with new, much more clearer/sharper logos which are easily recognizable anywhere:

The above logo is too plain in my opinion. The helmet should be incorporated into the letter “C” ….

UCF doesn't waqnt to emphasize the "central" so why would they use a "C"? It looks awful on central michigan's helmet. I like the UCF or the head logo. Not a fan of just putting a C on the helmet and calling it a day.

I must didn't explain myself clearly.... Incorporate the Knights helmet into the letter "C" since "UCF" is used on the helmet. In fact, the javelin could be incorporated into the letter "F".

Sharks would at least had something to do with Florida given UCF's proximity to the beach which is the "Shark Bite Capital of the World" .

You know that Johnny Werzner kid - the kid who delivers papers in the
neighborhood? He's a fine kid. Some of the neighbors say he smokes
crack, but I don't believe it. Anyway, for his 10th birthday, all he
wanted was a burrow owl, just like his old man. "Dad, get me a burrow
owl. I'll never ask for anything else as long as I live". So the guy
breaks down and buys him a burrow owl. Anyway at 10:30 the other night I
go out into my yard and there's the Werzner kid looking up in the tree. I
said, "What are you looking for?" He said, "I'm looking for my burrow
owl." I say, "Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick! Everybody knows that a
burrow owl lives in a hole in the ground! Why the hell do you think they
call it a burrow owl, anyway?!" Now Stuart, do you think a kid like that
is gonna know what the queers are doing to the soil?

I didn't even know they had changed their name. Even though there is always the unfortunate golden shower reference (see Tulsa), I actually liked the team being called the Golden Knights, it has a more personal identity than just Knights. Oh well, it's still the same team, and I look forward to visiting their stadium every other year or so.

For those that don't know this, USF was actually called the Golden Brahman way back when... Pretty bad, USF really needed the name change, for UCF I think either Knights of Golden Knights was just fine.

I like the UCF Titans or Florida Tech Titans name that was suggested earlier in this thread.

Its a shame the school never capitalized on the many Greek Mythology/Constellation place-names on campus (Gemini, Orion, Aquarius, Pyxis, Andromeda, Libra, Pictor, Scorpius, etc) .

Maybe instead of Knightro, the mascot could've been Hercules or something.

We were originally the Florida Tech Citronaughts. While the Citronaught is kind of dumb too, at least it was unique. If I could re-write history I would have kept the Florida Tech name and chosen the Conquistador as our mascot. It's still kind of like a Knight, but it would be unique and would draw on Florida's history as a Spanish colony.

I went to high school in Key West. We were the Fighting Conchs. I always loved that mascot and it's very appropriate for a school in the Keys.

Blame the student contest in the early 70s. The other top pick was to become the Vultures. That would have been weird.

After Gators, Seminoles and Hurricanes... not a whole lot left to identify with as a State program.

What do Bulls have to do with "South" Florida in Tampa, Fla?

Panthers is another one that could have been used. NHL hockey team uses it, FIU and FIT both use it as well. So that's over played.

FAU's owl, I was once told is a reference to the burrowing owl which is indigenous to Florida. So... kinda gay but I guess that works.

UNF uses an Osprey.... which is kinda funny
[Image: UNF+Ospreys.jpg]

Worst State mascot IMO goes to the UWF Argonauts (which is kind of a play on Citronauts)

State linkage is kind of moot after a certain point.

My personal opinion would have been to keep the Florida Tech name and become...
Florida Tech Titans

1. When USF was created, the university was the southernmost public university in the state, FAU was founded just two years later. During that time (an still today if you go either 15 minutes North in Wesley Chapel, or 15 mins East into Mango) the area was known for it's cattle farming.
2. FIU used to be the Sunblazzers, and changed their name in the 90's. Disappointing, I know
3. FAU is the Owls because the campus has been an official owl sanctuary for over 40 years.
4. Ospreys are bad ass. So are Sand Hill Cranes, but a shorter Osprey will do.
5. UWF... LOL. I do hope thy start a football program soon.
6. Calling something "gay" because it is seen as "lame" or maybe in this case "weak" is pretty middle school. You wouldn't want me to call every stupid statement a "total UCF move" now would you? Just think before you type, you wouldn't want stereotypes like "U Can't Finish" to be typed and talked around like it's going out of style.
7. FWIW, UCF is a great name and a great school. Your name could be worse, be thankful it's not Florida International.... Knights are pretty bad ass too. Keep winning bowl games and nobody will care who you are and what you're called.

Actually, Knights is historically correct. After crusades and wars across medieval Europe, the Knights used to travel to Orlando for vacation to relax and even befriended the local Seminole tribe to have feasts in their villages, which is now International Drive. And now, even today you will find many many English vacationing along International Drive to relax and feast at the numerous buffets located in the same area.

We went through a rebranding too; that is how we ended up with Pee-Dee the Pirate (our version of a ACC mascot) it represented the much softer side of being a Pirate. At one point ECU tried to move away from the skull and crossbones and the "real" Pirate...needless to say fans invented "Skully" the unofficial Pirate symbol...so glad the U went back to embracing "a Pirates life" including the skull and crossbones and Pirate attire; we still have the overstuffed public relations/imagine ACC style mascot too but it seems to take a backseat to the "real" Pirate at football games. UCF is doing what all schools do and that is to send a clear marketing message; most schools make mistakes (just like businesses) or at least slightly miss the target and make adjustments. UCF Knights is clean, simple and communicates a clear branding so I think they have landed on a winner.

Good points.

When UCF Athletics rebranded back in 2007 with the opening of the Arena and Stadium, they came out with several new logos, one of which that ended up on the basketball court:

The above logo was still too "busy" (especially if used on clothing attire or small pieces of merchandise), which is why the UCF lettered diagonal stacked logo because so popular.

This year, UCF's new and unique "black court", will now have the new stacked logo on it for the upcoming season.

I like the stacked logo - clean and efficient. Still, every school needs some version of their logo that includes the mascot symbol, and the one with the knight gripping the sword looks good for that.
