Man, we look for arguments. Go ahead and give your choice for a community relatively close to Charlotte that is similar to the size of Harrisonburg.

I chose Salisbury, because they both are less than 50,000, have easy access to an interstate, location is not right up under the nose of a larger city, and finally, a Charlotte area resident could relate.

As far as nicer, I love Harrisonburg, so no place will compare. However, Salisbury is a very nice town that seems to be on a steady climb and makes the most of what it has to offer.

Waiting on your choice? Matter of fact, why don't we all chose a municipality that is close to the size of Harrisonburg which a person from Charlotte can easily relate (please don't).

One thing that bites me the wrong way is when I'm asked to give and opinion (Whiteboard3, "I have no idea about the size of the town), and then someone shoots it down without any suggestion of their own. I know Longhorn rubs us all the wrong way at times, but he at least backs up his statements, without being asked, I might say.

Dude, grab a beer.. I live in Charlotte too and was also just throwing out my opinion that Hburg is a ton nicer and bigger than Salisbury.. I won't bore you with a list of NC cities :) Nothing personal.

Calm down and Go Dukes!

I had recently looked up Harrisonburg and was surprised to see 2010 census was about 49k, now estimated be be about 51k. I got to H'burg bout 20 years ago. I dug up the 1990 count, and was under 31k. Man it has grown....

FWIW Salisbury is about 34k. Population wise sounds like H'burg about 20 yrs ago...

Assuming that is permanent residents, so when JMU is in session we're talking over 70k?

No, that count of around 50k for H'Burg is with students.

H'Burg/Rockingham County combined have had over 100k residents for more than 10 years now. The area was reclassified with the 2000 census as a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) when the population was counted at a bit over 109k.

Just a guess, but the 2013 population (H'Burg and Rockingham County) is probably over 125k now.

I'm not going to profess to know it all, but I thought that on-campus students do not count as local population because they are still living at their parents address? They're not sending census forms to on-campus students that I know of.
I thought that off-campus students that have that apartment as their primary address count as a harrisonburg resident, but otherwise they are counted as population where their parents live?

Are you certain? I looked at the US Census Bureau for Blacksburg (VT) and it said the 2012 estimate was 42,627. With over 31,000 students, plus professors and other university service staff I would guess VT could cover the 42k by themselves, so either there's no residents in Blacksburg not directly affiliated with the school, all the professors and service staff live outside the town limits or that number has to be sans non-local students.

This is almost correct. The off-campus student must list their apartment as their full time residence, otherwise they will go toward their parents' home. Very few students call their apartment, while in school, their permanent residence.

exactly. to count as a resident, you must legally do so. pay taxes to harrisonburg, obtain a driver's license for VA and with your local address, registered to vote in harrisonburg, etc. If you're still rocking your NY drivers license and your parents claim you on their taxes, you're not among the population figure for harrisonburg, even if you spend 9 out of 12 months in the town.

Nope, Longhorn is correct. You are all confusing census counting with residency for other purposes such as voting or taxes. The Census has its own rules. Wherever you live on the date of the official count, including your dorm, is where you are supposed to be counted. Regarding Blacksburg, I'm not that familiar with the area, but I know there are several other small towns/cities nearby. I'm sure at least some of the folks affiliated with VaTech don't live within town boundaries.

Thanks.

For the record, you don't have to pay taxes to register to vote, and a student's dorm address (or apt. address if living off campus) otherwise qualifies a student to vote in the area they go to school.

As far as allowing students to vote where they go to school, this is settled law based on a Supreme Court decision (Symm v. United States, 439 U.S. 1105 (1979). However, the Supreme Court in a 2008 ruling added a wrinkle that in essence allows a state to require students to possess a valid state ID (in the state where they are going to school) to exercise their rights to vote in their school town/city.

College students are counted in the census where they go to school.

http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2010/03/1...but-where/

Plenty of people work at, and attend, Virginia Tech who don't live in Blacksburg or even Montgomery County. (Grew up in Blacksburg, attended JMU, now in Roanoke)
