It's not dying but it is hurting IMO and here's why. I followed the NBA pretty closely for a lot of years. I followed college hoops less closely but closely enough that I knew the players on the top teams and the top players from other teams. When they moved to the NBA after four years one was able to continue to follow them. Now players are gone after a year and I have no idea who they are when they enter the NBA. Big name college players rarely make a bit impact in the pros because they developed that name over four years which means they weren't all that good. I'll read about a trade of some guy who has been in the league for a couple years and I've never heard of him and have no idea what school he attended.

Same problem in reverse afflicts college hoops. Players for the marquee teams are gone so quickly no one becomes familiar with them and there is a sense that teams like Kentucky are really pro teams acting as a minor league for the NBA. Or maybe I'm just getting old and don't care that much about it anymore but the loss of so many top players after one year really killed my interest in both levels.

I agree with you. I don't really care for the NBA as much for some of the reasons you mentioned...

However, I don't think a lot of people have the problem. The NBA is rolling in cash from younger fans.

Yeah, I guess that's who they cater to and I understand a free market for talent. Players shouldn't be forced to stay in school even one year, IMO. But it has affected MY interest some. It's not as though the Final Four has lost its relevance either. I guess it's just a paradigm shift -younger fans don't even recall the days when top players stayed in college four years.

The 2011 Tourney final 4 included 3 teams from non P5 conferences, most of the Final 4's since 06 have had at least 1 team from a non P5 league. That will never happen in football, unless by some miracle a non P5 team beats 2 P5 teams on the road convincingly and the 2 P5 teams either win their conference or play for their conference title and that non P5 team goes undefeated. even then it would be a strech.

Us in the mid-major world shouldn't be complaining about the one and dones in college basketball. Its the reason why our top teams can compete in the NCAA tournament. When you have fifth year seniors who are 22/23 playing against teams that are younger, its a nice advantage.

College hoops just aren't the same with the NBA draft policy only needing to attend school for 1 year before declaring. No team can ever build a true dynasty because it seems like literally every team with a star player up and leaves for the draft after 1 or 2 years. It's just not the same.

I love that despite all of the hardships us Rocket basketball fans have endured these past few years, that we're still one of the strongest fan bases in the conference.

Most MAC schools (and even many in the AQ world) are drawing mere hundreds for women's basketball games. Has Toledo historically had that much support? Is it the recent WNIT title? What can it be attributed to?

I suddenly do not feel bad that I've never driven up to CMU in the winter to catch a BB game. It appears no one on campus does either. Incidently, my HS draws more people than that for BB games.

I stay nearby and watch UofD or OaklandU play (and this year, I can watch them play each other - twice).

UT has led the MAC in WBB attendance for something like 20+ straight years. It had always been around 1,500-2,500. But after the WNIT Championship, other deep WNIT runs, Coach Cullop being a great ambassador for UT, and great fan-friendly players Naama, Toledo has really rallied around this team.

Don't take this as gospel, but I believe anybody who bought men's season tickets also got women's season tickets for "free" as part of the package. Toledo counted that as part of their "paid" women's attendence.

A college fudging attendance figures ... that'll never happen. Just ask Akron football where 5,000 has equaled 15,000 the past couple years.

Though, being somebody who attends roughly 8-10 men's games a year, Akron definitely only counts paid/student attendance in their men's basketball figures (not the hundreds of free tickets given out to local youth leagues). There have been several games where I was stunned the "announced" attendance was as low as it was .... the Middle Tennessee State game being one of them. I thought for sure it would be 3,500, but was announced at 2,700. There was a game against NIU two years ago that I thought would be announced at 5,000-plus, but it came in at 4,300.

Though, even if Toledo's women were "only" pulling in 2,000, still impressive, and better than nearly half the men's teams.

I can assure you nobody "gave" me free tix for the women when I bought men' s tickets. I've never heard of any such package. I'm not positive how Toledo counts their women's attendance but butts in seats = 3,000 or more nearly every game. We have more people forming our fan tunnel than many MAC teams draw for games. Believe me, the number cited is pretty close to the number of folks who show up.

Can't say why but women's hoops has always been big in Toledo and Cullop and Naama Shafir piqued the interest even more. It's an atmosphere I would love to see our men's games replicate. Like BG's coach said " UT's women are like rock stars there".
