Only those with lisps and dainty hands call it Oootsa.
The rest pronounce it U. T. S. A.

It's logical why no one like the directional part to their name. I used to like our old name "Texas Western College" or TWC. They could have changed it to TWU but it would be hard to pronounce so I guess UTEP will have to do. It's better than Ootsa anyway. 03-wink

No. Tennessee is divided into three distinct regions defined as west, MIDDLE, and east TN.

Exactly. That's what the three stars on the state flag represent. They are called the three grand divisions.

Central is not a term that is used by any Tennessean regarding the midstate. The only instance I can recall of the word Central being used in the name of a state institution was a hospital for the mentally insane that used to be on the location of the Dell computer assembly complex across from the Nashville airport. For a while in the middle of the last century lt was called Central State Hospital.

I keep seeing ads for this "Upper Iowa" place on TV... I think it's one of those U Phoenix type colleges. I think the "upper" part is pretty funny... who talks like that? And there is also a "Northern Iowa," if memory serves, and it's a legit state school.

Upper Iowa was founded in the 1850s and has been an accredited institution from day one, and I'm guessing its name came from the fact that it's in the northern part of the state. However, imho it sold its soul to the devil by becoming primarily a correspondence/online school, although it still has an old-fashioned campus with about 1000 students.

Regarding the topic--I would go with UMT

It's a free site and I don't get paid anything for doing it, so concious clear in sharing. At the very least it will give you some historical perspective on why we don't use "MTxx"

Why not just use..."University of Middle Tennessee"? Take the "State" name out of it?

"MT" for short.

That's what most of us want. the official name to be University of Middle Tennessee and then always go by MT, or Middle Tennessee.

No doubt....that makes the most sense. Have you guys tried any petition efforts? Try getting some donors on board with the idea?

haha... "why not just use University of Middle Tennessee?" he says... did you read the entire thread? If only it were that easy, other schools in the region are the issue,

Glad we don't have these problems although our sports teams narrowly avoided being known as the Boogercats. That's actually true:
