I'M STARTING A MOVIE COLLECTION
I want to start a movie collection in 3 categories and continue one in a third.
1. Baseball Movies Which ones should I have on this list. Obviously... Major League, Bull Durham, A League of Their Own, Field of Dreams, The Natural, The Rookie, 8 Men Out...
2. Kentucky and Louisville Movies Elizabethtown, Keep Your Distance, Stripes, Return of the Living Dead...
3. War and War Related Movies I have quite a few but would like to know more that I should get.[b]
4. Racing Movies- i.e. Seabiscuit, Racing Stripes, Dreamer, Six Pack, Stroker Ace, Days of Thunder, Madison, etc.
Do you have any suggestions to add to my lists?

Here are a couple to add to your list of Racing films. I don't remember the name of the movie, but Richard Pryor did a movie about Wendell Scott, the first black race car driver. It was done as a serious profile and was a good film. It had a good bit of humorous things in it, which is appropriate considering Richard Pryor was in the film. I just wish I could remember the film's name. You could add that one to your racing film library. You might also want to add the film about Shirley Muldowney, the first woman to break into the top feul dragster fellowship.
And I can't believe you left The Babe out of your baseball films. Where would baseball be without Babe Ruth? They need to make a movie about Roberto Clemente too. I hope that happens soon, and that they do a good job of it. There is someone who should be immortalized in film.
Your Kentucky films should include one about Daniel Boone. There is another glaring omission. You might also look into a another film about the Revolutionary War era debate over whether or not to create a 14th state to be called Vandalia, which would have encompassed western Maryland, most of West Virginia, and part of central and eastern Kentucky. They hold a Vandalia Festival annually during the Sternwheel Regatta in Charleston, WV to celebrate the memory of that ideal.
For war films, you should make sure that you have Bridge at Remaggen. The film could have been done better, but if you read the book it tells the tale of the taking of the one bridge that remained that allowed Patton's men to drive into the heart of Germany. Taking that bridge intact, after the Germans unsuccessfully tried to blow it up, probably shortened the war in Europe by a month or two.

Bridge at Remaggen was indeed a great story and a very important event.
I wish Hollywood would focus more on making or re-making more war movies. What I mean is there are some great stories out there to be told; especially from World War II and the Civil War.
But even for the ones that have been made into movies decades ago, they usually weren

I would add All Quiet on the Western Front. I know it has a bit of an anti-war feel to it, but it is brutal and upfront.
Patton is obvious, but a little overrated. IMO.
Tora Tora Tora is enjoyable, and I have to appreciate the effort to tell both sides of the story (at least the side from the Japanese admirals). It's a bit cheesy, as are all war movies of that period.
Pearl Harbor isn't worth the effort required to destroy it.
Platoon and Full Metal Jacket are required for any war movie library.
If you don't mind a venture into the mind of the enemy (and have 4 hours to spare and patience with subtitles), I would pick up Das Boot.
Lawrence of Arabia isn't much of a war movie in the fact that it is mostly about the characters and less about the battles, but the interaction between societies is worth watching.
...just my $0.02.

I've always enjoyed "A Bridge Too Far" great cast!
"Apocalypse Now" has always been one of my favorites, though some will argue that it is way too distorted and detatched from reality.

Mike, if you don't have the HBO movie 61* on that baseball list, you're making an incomplete collection. IMHO, that movie may be the best baseball movie that has been made. It and The Natural are two of my favorites.

Here's another war movie for you...
The Devil's Brigade
The story of how the Special Forces was formed. The USA sent their misfits, Canada sent their best troops, and a commander that nobody wanted turned them into the most feared fighting unit ever created.
One more war movie...
Sgt. York
How many men have captured entire divisions almost single handed?
And a war film they should make...
The life of 2 time CMOH winner Major General Smedley Butler, USMC.
This movie will probably never be made however. If you've heard the name, you'll probably know why. If you haven't, read War Is A Racket to understand.

Some of these are repeats, but I wanted to reaffirm:
Apocalypse Now
Bridge Over the River Kwai
Kelly's Heroes
Breaker Morant (Boer War)
Gallipoli (WWI in the Dardanelles)
All Quiet on the Western Front (w/ Richard Thomas aka Johnboy Walton)
Cross of Iron (w/ James Coburn)
Big Red One
The Blue Max
Dr Strangelove
The Hunt for Red October
Little Big Man
Das Boot (The Boat)
South Pacific
Some of these aren't "war movies" in the sense of non-stop shooting, but are movies that would not be the same story without the war going on around them.
And last but not least.... The Green Berets !!

Skip the modern version of All's Quiet on the Western Front...and go for the original...made in 1930.
Even though the Director made it as an anti-war movie...it did show what went on during trench battles of WWI.
Remakes usually screw everthing up...aka see remake "Pearl Harbor" vs "Tora! Tora! Tora!"
KL
PS. When one watches "Das Boat"...play it in German...with English Subtitles...so you can hear the original actors voices.
It will be much more realistic.

Thought of another one.
BAT 21 (Danny Glover and Gene Hackman)
Don't know why I didn't think of it earlier.

The Outlaw Josey Wales is probably more of Western, but it's still a war related movie. It's one of my all time favorites.

Gah, I forgot about The Dirty Dozen.
On the subject of Clint Eastwood movies, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly could be a war movie too, as it took place during the Civil War.

I notice you don't have Force 10 from Navarone on the list. That's another one that springs to mind. Of course you never know what will spring into my mind, or when it will spring there.
