Blue People Living In Kentucky
I was talkin' to some of my kin last night and heard what I thought was a tall tale. But I looked it up on the net... It was true. I was both creeped out and saddened at the same time. You know Kentucky is the Bluegrass state, and one of our best songs is Blue Moon of Kentucky. It turns out that deep in the hollows or the Appalachian Mountains there was a clan of
blue skinned people. I don't mean pale, I mean blue. The ironci thing about this is that they lived on Troublesome Creek near Hazard, KY. Has anyone ever heard of the Blue Fugates? Here's the link if you want to read the twisted tale.

You saw a picture of them? I haven't seen any. Plus I thought most of the Blue Fugates were from 1880-1920. Where'd you see a picture? From what the stories say, they were really really blue, like bruises or plums or indigo.

I was in the library at U of L years ago and one of my buds had heard of them and looked the picture up in a medical book. It was freaky. Here's a pic:

I live in Appalachia and I didn't know about the "blue" people...speaking of Appalachian legends/truths....the Melungeons get a lot of play in our part of the Mountains....According to legend..the Melungeons were a group of people living in the Appalachia prior to European colonization. To the explorers confusion, they were neither white nor Native American. Yet the Melungeons had very blue eyes and some red hair. Where did they come from?

I saw that picture as well, but I couldn't determine if it was a photo or a painting. It's obviously a painting right? There was no color film in that time period.

Mike you can take and old black and white picture and have it reproducted in color. Ah, the wonders of modern technology. However, I am not sure on that picture.

They are probably descended from the early Celtic explorers who roamed the eastern seaboard around the 5th Century B.C. There is considerable evidence of their wanderings from Nova Scotia down into the Appalachian Mountains.
