Should McCarley Redshirt This Year?
Below is an excerpt from an article by Harry Minium:

04 AUGUST 2013 | 9:26 PM

Sizing up who may back up Heinicke as ODU opens practice

Shane McCarley, a 6-foot, 202-pound true freshman from Manvel High in suburban Houston, Texas, will compete for playing time from the start.

He’s the highest-rated quarterback recruit ODU has ever signed. Rated the nation’s 51st-best high school by ESPN, he was the Houston Touchdown Club Player of the Year and Fox Sports Texas High School Player of the Year.

He has incredible talent – he completed 227 of 349 passes for 4,101 yards and 55 touchdowns as a senior, and, no, that’s not a misprint.

He passed for 8,816 yards and 111 touchdowns in his high school career.

McCarley turned down Houston, Louisiana Tech and a dozen other Conference USA and Sun Belt schools.

Quarterbacks coach Ron Whitcomb said ODU would like to redshirt McCarley and won’t burn a year of his eligibility in mop-up duty.

But if for some reason Heinicke is unable to play, McCarley could be the guy under center.
______________________________________________________________________________

Let’s all hope that Heinicke stays healthy and McCarley gets a redshirt year. If so, we may see a real quarterback controversy a couple of years down the road after Bentley gets here. Wilder will earn his money sorting that one out – but what a problem to have!

This is a hot topic and I'm on record that I'd like to in an ideal situation NOT RS McCarley so the next 6 years look like this:

2013: Taylor Henicke
2014: Taylor Heinicke
2015: Shane McCarley
2016: Shane McCarley
2017: Shuler Bentley
2018: Shuler Bentley

That's perfect world stuff and probably not realistic.

RE: Should McCarley Redshirt This Year?
I see some things at the QB position getting hot in the next few years. I'm sure McCarley and Bentley have it in there head that they will be starting at QB at some point in time at ODU. The problem is when, how much time will they have at the postion, and if one does not get the starting position, what school can they get a starting position at.

McCarley seems like the guy to back Heinicke up should, and I phope not, he go down, but he also seems like what we need to replace Heinicke when he leaves. So, I would redshirt him. ODU seems very adament about him being the next guy to lead the offense.

That's a nice looking lineup over the next six years. The interesting thing is, we don't even know who will be recruited in the last four of those years. There could be a future NFL HOF'r recruited to ODU in any of those years. Don't you just love thinking about those kinds of possibilities?

There is no doubt he should RS. Whitcomb seems to agree.

If he RS then he can not play baseball after he graduates, correct? If he cycled through his 4 years he would be welcome to play 1 year of baseball at just about any school of his choosing.

Yes, he definitely redshirts.

I think a LOT of people are overlooking David Washington, though. He's also very talented and could force his way into the picture. I'm not for etching incoming Freshmen and rising HS seniors in stone. A lot can happen between now and then.

When I saw Washington in the spring game last year or the last open practice last year, I can't remember which, he looked great. I def wouldn't be ruling him out. He's also a huge run threat.

I expect to see David Washington on the field this year in many different situations.

Which could EASILY happen.

The question is really whether Bobby would pull the shirt off mid-season like he did with TH. I think he would if Washington or the other kid aren't ready for primetime.

IMO, David Washington is the by far most underrated player on this team. No one talks about him but I've heard from several people that he has been on of the big stars of the spring/first few days of practice.

The 2015 QB battle between RS Junior Washington, RS Junior McElroy, RS Sophomore McCarley, and RS Freshman Bentley will be awesome.

I was wondering about this. I think it was in a Harry article that I heard about him playing other positions, a few have mentioned it here too.

Haha no I don't think the freshman will be graduating in '14 but I've talked to several football players about any standouts so far and they mentioned his name. I just wanted to keep you all well informed

In spring Wilder said that Washington will be playing, that much talent can't be standing on the sidelines. He said he has packages for him and was working on special team stuff.

RE: Should McCarley Redshirt This Year?
Just connecting the dots with something that was posted in another thread by Anarchy... An article by Harry Minium was released yesterday about the first full-pads practice. Here it is.

http://hamptonroads.com/2013/08/several-...d-dominion

Take specific note of this excerpt:

"David Washington, the redshirt freshman quarterback from Raleigh, had a solid week of practice and threw well in Friday’s scrimmage, including 40-yard pass to wide receiver and junior college transfer Gerard Shillow.

For now at least, he is the backup for Heinicke, with redshirt freshman Colin McElroy third and true freshman Shane McCarley fourth."

If Harry speaks the truth, /thread.
