Well, I hope such a thing never happens.

If it does, ND's picks for 9 friends may not include many on your list.

My picks (if the worst case scenario ever happened, ND had to join a football conference and all existing conferences imploded):

USC
Stanford

(California/West Coast alumni and recruiting)

Texas
Oklahoma

(Southwest alumni and recruiting)

Pitt
Navy
BC

(Northeast alumni/recruiting)

Florida State
Georgia Tech

(Southeast alumni/recruiting)

There aren't any schools that are worthy.

Sure, there are. I just named them.

ND has been playing about the same 7 opponents every year for a long time now.

A school doesn't have to be in a conference to have rivals or play a number of teams every year or quite often.

That is pretty much exactly what I would have listed. I was going to cut out all the Big Ten programs too. That really isn't the future of Notre Dame football. Even Notre Dame is having to adapt to the future of college football.

The one change I might put before you is swapping out FSU for Miami. Southern Florida seems a better hotspot for Notre Dame. The farther south you go in Florida the farther North you go.

Maybe swap out Oklahoma for BYU or Baylor but Oklahoma seems to be a future favorite of Notre Dame.

My picks are similar to Terry's. But I'd pick Syracuse over Georgia Tech or Oklahoma. Not many Catholics in Atlanta or Oklahoma.

If Notre Dame wanted to be in a conference, they would already be.

However, when the day comes that they will need to be in a conference full-time for football, they certainly will not be able to form their own and also maintain relevant rivalries.

1) Agreed.

2) The OP's speculative hypothetical was that ND gets to pick 9
"friends" to form a conference from scratch (meaning all existing conferences have imploded/do not exist.

Southeast and Southwest exposure and recruiting. That is a key for ND scheduling (coverage in all parts of the country).

You can swap Baylor or Arizona State for Oklahoma or Clemson or North Carolina for GT.

ND has a history with Georgia Tech and Jack Swarbrick has stated that ND's goals for ACC affiliation included having access to large markets like Atlanta.

I think that Miami for FSU is fine but ND likes playing the Seminoles.

FSU is currently the better program and has more national cachet currently than Miami.

Wouldn't ND want to play Michigan for a driveable game? I'd delete OU and add UM.

No need. One, ND will have six home games for Midwest coverage.

Two, cut ties completely with the Big Ten.

So TerryD, whatcha think bout that? You really don't want to give up on The Big House do ya?

Damn....he beat me to it, I expected more Terry!

Nah, I am calm and serene.

I am pretty sure that ND will continue to disengage from/with the Big Ten.

That makes me happy. :)

Besides, 17 days in Scotland and Ireland (and many pubs) have made me pretty mellow.

If there was a Big Ten team, it would be Michigan State. Purdue would also be acceptable, but no way in hell would it be Michigan. Michigan tried to destroy ND's program at least twice by getting other Big 10 schools to boycott playing ND. MSU never joined the Big Ten's boycott of ND, and I don't think Purdue did either (at least not for long if they did).

Some slight revisions from TerryD's list (probably by far the most accurate, but still, some changes are needed)

USC
Stanford
Texas
LSU (sub for Oklahoma. More Catholics in Louisiana than Oklahoma too, btw)
Michigan State
Pittsburgh
Navy
FSU or Miami (Miami's a little closer to ND's traditional model, but FSU has more market penetration. Coin flip)
Georgia Tech (more Catholics in Georgia than people realize).

I figured you would have had Miami over FSU. Catholics vs Convicts and all.
