What, you think I want to think about the shame of Abu Ghraib and the disgrace of Guantanamo? That I want to remember the foolish, childish crusade of a gutless, spineless, privileged-child-of-power draft-dodging president who got 4,400 Americans and Allah alone knows how many Iraqis killed while the rest of us bellowed "'sport ahr troooops!" at halftime and never thought to question our own shared guilt? That I want to ask my own culpability for another president who asserts the life-or-death power to blow anyone to hell with a missile strike who pisses him off? Who promises to erase the stain of Guantanamo yet leaves it somehow still open almost six years later?

Do you think I want to ask why NOT ONE national leader still will not stand and say "torture is wrong" over a decade later?

I prefer to drown my shame in Genlivet and football. You may choose your own security blanket as you prefer. Roll Tide.

30 year old single malt Glenlivet is a great Scotch of choice! We're on the same page. The problem is the political system has been jobbed by corporate donations and we have been cut out of the loop in this phony 1 party with two faces system. We have almost two more weeks of football before the security blanket gets yanked lets enjoy it and let hope spring eternal.

I am comfortable in my delusion and denial.

Just like how most Americans are comfortable in their delusion and denial that our selfless men and women serving in Our Armed Forces are over seas serving in Our best interests.

No, it's just that most people love the feel good attitude of being mindless cheerleaders for the military because questioning the reality of the situation is just too hard and uncomfortable for most folks to handle.

Just keep waving that flag in one hand and holding "The Good Book" in the other. That makes you a good person right? 07-coffee3

No, I would argue that peoples' perspective on the military is simply a reversal of the reactions from Vietnam. While I think being spit on and labelled 'baby killers' was egregious, I can at least commend the fact that the protests were a small factor in ending the war. Saying 'thank you for your service' is essentially tacit permission for the government to keep doing what its doing.

When I was in, I wanted to be able to say to someone after they thanked me, 'no thank you for your service by voting in politicians that got the military out of a no win situation.' Unfortunately, that never happened. And I would disagree with you H1 regarding questioning authority; it is a relatively easy and in this day and age painless thing to do. What is hard is gathering the critical mass necessary to affect change.

BK:BK:

I think I would enjoy seeing more B1G/SEC CFB match-ups at the beginning of the year. I like LSU/Wisky and really wish the UGA/OSU was still going to happen. If the committee is instructed to weigh close losses to top opponents more than wins over cupcakes, then I think we'll see more of these games. The two most passionate CFB should be playing each other more frequently in games that matter. The post season Bowl match-ups, while nice, don't provide the metric necessary to judge conference strength from year to year.

Yeah, get someone to question individual persons that run off and join the Military right now knowing full well they will be running off to fight in one of two countries when the continued fighting really has nothing to do with securing the country.

Get folks to question the way over the top "Faux Patriotism" that the media puts upon us every chance they get. It really is some very blatant brainwashing going on. As long as people are constantly having all the "Patriotic Symbols" thrown in their face, will they dare question how those Symbols are being used outside of the country?

I disagree that it really is that easy in this day and age. If it was, it would be happening.

You are absolutely right though on what "Thank you for your service" truly means. I appreciate folks willingness to serve but today, folks need to realize what they are Volunteering for. It isn't about defending America.

To the other topic, I don't think it should just be Big Ten vs SEC if we are talking regular season. It should be between all five major conferences otherwise it is incomplete. Truly tie the schedules together.

Fair enough, I misunderstood your earlier comment. My mentality on all of that is very similar and I am not proud of that. I tried to be active about it and saw first hand that folks are not just apathetic towards it all but so many actually support our troops "killing muslims".

My idea of what it is to be a Patriot in this country has changed quite a bit over time. The country has a sickness.

That's what happens when you replace actual ideals and standards with mere symbolism. We get madder about improper flag usage than we do about violations of our constitutional rights. Add to that the fact that you can't get news on the news, just human interest drivel, and that the kids are coming out of school these days knowing very little about the constitution or history but they are well versed in the opinions of their teachers and the current political pet peeves and is it any wonder we are where we are?
