Yeah...so why is your AD such a chickena$$ about scheduling a tough opponent?

I guess if you're going to get a $1M game, better it be against an opponent where you feel like you have at least a puncher's chance than one against the NFC South preseason favorites. We may love our ODU Labralions, but in no way is this or next year's team Alabama-ready.

Interesting that Georgia State is playing Alabama AND West Virginia and only getting a combined $1.2M for them.

Can a team command more based off of a projected fan base brought with them?

In Georgia State's case, their opponents should demand they pay a stipend before bringing them in 07-coffee3

I'm sure that some designated victims are worth more because they can bring in crowds, but for the top schools, it's probably not worth it because they can trot out the ITT Tech glee club backups and still sell out because of who they are.

I'm surprised Bama doesn't just say "hey, we'll pay your travel, give you a taste of the big time and third-tier TV, pack you some Dreamland for the trip home and send you on your way so you can tell your friends and family that you experienced the solemn greatness of Roll Tide"

I guess the tradeoff for paying for an opponent that travels is there's a decent change said opponent is going to be good enough to beat you on your turf.

When you are talking about Alabama, West Virginia or other BCS, tier one programs it would make no difference. Those schools are so established and already have fantastic attendance for home games. In realty they only offer a handful of tickets to the visiting school, anyway. I would image that is has absolutely nothing to do with the amount of the guarantee payout for those schools.

Remember the guarantee game(s) are usually negotiated when the home school will not agree to a home and home. Most FBS and BCS schools draw a very distinctive line in the sand for home and home contracts. Historically they schedule guarantee games with tier two FBS schools when they need to fill in an opening in their schedule. They typically have no desire or interest in a home and home with said school. They have in the past scheduled FCS programs for the same reason. Obviously FBS schools have been paid more than FCS schools. That may change in the future. It appears that BCS schools will look for any advantage they can get to give them a better strength of schedule. Especially if we continue to head toward a future playoff system that leads to an on the field crowning of a National Championship (maybe 6 -10 years in the future). If that happens you will see less and less FCS schools playing BCS schools.

An example might be:

SEC Football guidelines

1) Home and home with OOC schools they have an established rivalry with.
2) OOC tier one schools
3) 50,000 seat stadium or larger.
4) OOC games with any tier one level program where they feel they may potentially receive a future recruiting edge or visibility for the program.

ACC Football Guidelines might be:

1) Home and home with schools they have an established rivalry with.
2) Schools they feel they may potentially receive any future recruiting edge or visibility for their program.
3) 35,000 seat stadium or larger.
4) Regional or travel considerations.

If there is no home and home contract negotiated. Then I would think potential fans, or how well an FBS school travels might come into play with schools like Duke, Wake Forest or Temple.

I know in ODU's case we are hoping to contract home and home only with FBS and BCS schools in the future. Obviously there will always be exceptions. The fact that we are just jumping into the FBS pool we know that BCS will have to be negotiated on a case by case basis.

ODU is paying a few of the FCS schools that are coming to SB Ballard this year. Norfolk State is the one exception, we have a home and home that has been negotiated and re-negotiated several times.

Your deal with NSU is understandable and probably one that your AD really hasn't lost any sleep over. As stated, it was negotiated some time ago and they have a large enough stadium that it will not be like playing in some of the smaller stadiums in the FCS. You guys will make up 80% of the crowd.

I think JMU's philosophy - and it's one I agree with - is to schedule games that our fans can actually get to. And, not only get to them, but be competitive. Teams like Tech, Maryland, UNC, WVU (esp. at FedEx), Duke....these are games that you can drive to pretty easily. I think Bourne and co. have done a nice job of that. We've been competitive in several of those games, too. Yeah, it'd be cool to go play Georgia or Florida or something but I hate to see us take a blood bath.

RE: Paydays once we are FBS
I know it's not like we have a lot of choice in the matter, but others I'd really love to see would be Temple, UVA (we know that story), ECU, Pitt, Penn State (with the reduction in scholarship players), N.C. State, etc. I really think UMD and UNC are good gets for us. I've been down for both UNC games and had a really good time both times. Would have like us to play better. We actually should have been in that game a couple of years ago. We were inside the 5 at the end of the first half and got 0 points and then went on a 10+ minute drive in the 3rd quarter and I think came away with 3. Anyway, those are great games for us. I hate the teams Bourne brings into Bridgeforth (e.g. Alcorn, CCSU) but he does a nice job with the FBS games.

Throw Wake, Rutgers, Kentucky, Louisville, and Memphis into the mix.
