baylor guy-

FLAHSHIPS you are trying to downplay the mizz loss by using your weird definition of a flagship school to downplay the importance of mizzouri. the term flagship has been used to define schools long before both of us were born. the term flagship is commonly used to describe schools. look at their school website or wikipedia. you cant get through the first paragraph without them boasting about being a flagship.

thats why you simply can not use this other flagship definition that you came up with because its misleading and the philosophy behind it has no affect on conference realignment

i can guarantee you that no conference ever decided that being a "headliner" increased a schools value when discussing potential new schools. because no one cares about something like that. a strong conference has an all for one mentality for starters, and 2nd they couldnt care what a schools status is in another conference. and 3rd the b12 is the only conference with a clear cut #1 headliner school. and some will argue that maybe thats a bad thing.

aggie will never be a flagship school whereas UNL CU, & mizz are. you cant fight that and you especially cant say that aggie is a flagship whereas mizz isnt. its a common term and it cant be changed

AAU i said aau and/or flagship schools. the ute's may not be aau, but they are still a flagship school and that adds value. they may not be an aau school but they are 47th in the ARWU rankings (compared to ku/isu being in the 151-200 range). you could make a pretty good case that utah is on par with both ISU & KU and you can even say utah is better. and this is where using just AAU status to judge a schools academic value is flawed. because at the end of the day its still just one factor out of many. another thing to consider about utah is that was one of the few moves where a conference picked a school out of desperation (CU needed a partner). but looking at academic rankings. it appears the CU & utah were the best academic options for the pac12 (i know you are gonna say texas or BYU but those were not reasonable options because of the strings attached with the LHN/mormon affiliation)

UNL/MIZZ
nebraska lost its AAU, but it was AAU when the b10 invited them & the b10 did go on the record saying had they known UNL would lose its AAU they wouldnt have invited them.

im a b10 homer and i had a hard time accepting the UNL move. my logic on the whole thing was that both mizz/UNL would have been the bottom feeders of the b10 academically. if the b10 was gonna add a school below their academic standards at least make it a school that brings something to the table in football. this is probably the only time where football was a major factor in conf. realignment. i guess being a top program has that affect. but realistically......its hard to say that FSU/auburn or clemson could have used their FB to get into the b10.

another thing i always wondered about that move was wether or not delany was trying to destroy the b12 by making that move. the potential of facing texas in the rose bowl must of made him dream $ in his sleep.

do dollars drive conference realignment?
you made that statement as yes. i say no.

that mentality seems to be pushed by b12 homers and thats why i cant stand the b12 so much. if college sports were about making money then every team would play football, basketball, have 4 women sports and that would be it. but schools dont do that because athletics are about promoting a schools name brand not making money. thats why unc is not going to the b10 because their acc allegiance is worth more to them than any b10 payday. thats why the b10 wont take ISU, because their academic prestige is worth more to them than $5 mill more a year.

just because a school makes 5 mill more in a new conference doesnt mean they make 5 million more.

for example, the pac12 footprint has 6x the amount of colorado alumni than the big 12 footprint and saw a 36% increase in donations since joining the p12.

FSU on the otherhand has most of FSU's alumni are located within the ACC and not the b12. do you really think $5 mill more a year is worth playing outside your general area of fans? some things you just cant put a dollar amount on.

look at texas. sure they get $15 mill a year. but is killing your football viewership, damaging your conference, and ending your in state rivalry really worth 15 mill?

economics 101: everything is worth money. and any deal you take you have to factor if its worth the value you lose in your possessions.

these are just some of the examples of why
1. money isnt everything
2. why academics do play a significant factor

ive always felt that academics played the biggest role in conference realignment. in fact i think that it is the driving factor. at the end of the day which school decreased its academic surroundings when it joined a new conference?
