Did McNair play at BFS? I don't remember that...

Only time we have played Alcorn State was last year....

Somebody could have made $50 bucks off me here, I'd swear I saw McNair at BFS.

I remember in '94 it was rumored that JMU was going to host Alcorn St. and McNair in the first round of the playoffs. That didn't happen and instead we hosted Troy.

Yup, I recall that too. There were rumors going around that we were going to get to see McNair.

I'll never forget one play (although I have forgotten which year it was, around '90 or so) when Towson played JMU. There was a fumble and a huge pileup and scramble for the ball. Just when everyone thought the play was about to be blown dead, here comes that punk Dave Meggett somehow sprinting out of the pileup with the ball in his hands and racing for a TD. I think he was halfway to the end zone before anyone else, including the refs, even knew he had the ball. One of the damnedest plays I've ever seen in person.

Damn... that means I must have seen that play too... yet have no memory of it. Which is odd, because I would have been sober. Damn shame when I start losing recall on the sober stuff.

Saw Emmit Smith in BFS a couple of years ago, although he wasn't playing. Arthur Moats is one of my favorites and there are too many awesome stories to list.

Oh my goodness... that Brian Westbrook game at JMU in '98 was incredible. We simply couldn't tackle that guy. One memory of that game was when he form-hurdled one of our linebackers then proceeded to serve up a 'humility shiver' to one of our DBs on the way to the endzone. Dude could flat out play.

Macey was such a great all-round athlete. Played some baseball at JMU I think, as well as FB.

I watched the Cowboy pre-season game and saw the horrific play live when Macey broke his arm. It was the very last preseason game, and near the end of the game...I don't remember who the Cowboys were playing...and then Macey goes down with an arm broken so bad he's out for the season.

I believe Macey hung around and played a few seasons (for Chicago I think)...but before that unlucky injury the Cowboys...especially Michael Irvin...thought Macey was going to be an NFL star. A healthy Macey is my starting WR on an all-JMU squad.

I think Devlin played like one or two plays on the BFS field...then was knocked silly and out of the game. (Anyone remember who got the hit?)

Then that tall, skinny Fr QB came in, and didn't do a damn thing...until the last possession, where he got UD close enough to kick the game winning FG as time expired.

That kind of "close, but no cigar" ending seemed to happen alot that season. 03-banghead

Mike Cawley and him hooked up for quite a few TD's at BFS...before my time at JMU but my parents took me to a few games growing up. I don't remember which year but the students tore the goal post down and took it to the lake/greek row...was pretty cool watching that as a 10ish year old.

Also, I didn't see any mention of Curtis Keaton or Delvin Joyce (at the time, not sure if its still the case but the only D-1, FBS or FCS, with a 1,000 yds in punt returns, KO returns, receiving and rushing)...both studs at JMU....special teamers in the NFL.

Ed Perry was a big TE for the Dukes...worked special teams with Miami for a few seasons as the long snapper...probably the longest NFL career for any Duke, Akeem is probably nearing that mark now...Perry was with the Dolphins for 6-7 years.

Macey was drafted by the SF Giants in the 2nd round out of high school in '93; that's how good a baseball prospect he was. The Royals also took a flier on him in the 55th round in '96. Of course, it was pretty clear by then he would be giving pro football a try but it was worth a gamble that late in the draft.

He might be the only JMU athlete to ever be drafted in the top 4 rounds in two different sports.

RE: NFL Players I Have Seen at BFS
Right from the start, it was pretty clear Ed Perry was gifted with the body and physical tools to at least have a great college career. I swear to God though, that boy could not catch a cold his first season or so. It was so bad that the guys and I in our section took to calling him stone hands and would feign disbelief when he actually did manage to haul one in. Fortunately he got it together eventually and I believe he even caught a TD pass from Marino at one point during his NFL career. Who would have guessed that...

I went back through the Dukes schedule during those years to see if any players were drafted from our opponents but there was only a handful and none of them jogged any memories for me. I'd guess Kavika Pittman out of McNeese was probably the most accomplished.
