Engineering students place 1st in NASA lunar wheel design competition
Thought this was awesome:

"A team of mechanical engineering students from Old Dominion University's Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology won the inaugural lunar wheel design competition held at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston earlier this month.

The students - who comprise the senior level Project Design and Management course taught by Stacie Ringleb, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, and advised by Colin Britcher and Robert Ash, professors of mechanical and aerospace engineering - have worked since January to design and build new wheels that could be used for future missions to the moon and Mars..."

As an ODU alumnus with a Civil Engineering degree, this makes me very proud of the young talent we have at ODU. Go ODU, and Aim High!

Really cool.

My Senior design project was to design a Lunar Construction Utility Vehicle. And as a group team concept. We also presented and competed, via NASA sponsorship, in Huntsville, AL. It was definitely nice rubbing elbows with the MIT's, Cal Techs, etc at that competition. We won an award for novel design approach.

I am glad to see these "many years" later that Old Dominion ME Dept. is still working on similar design concepts and getting much more earned recognition.

That's not possible! ODU is a 4th tier university! Surely JMU should have won hands down. 05-stirthepot

Excellent stuff! I did a co-op at NASA in high school for engineering - super cool place. Also, ran into a nice couple up in Baltimore this weekend for the Os game. They were season ticket holders and tailgated in the white lot and are mechanical engineers at NASA.

This type of stuff is easy to get behind. Frankly, I wish we publicized more of our academic achievements. Seems to me like a lot of the academic accomplishments stays tucked in the shirt. That, or I'm completely missing the boat somewhere.

I tend to see a lot of this type of news. We might even have the dean of Engineering come to our office and give another talk about where they are and accomplishments. That was a pretty cool and informative little event. If I hear things I'll post as well.

Excuse the clarification but unless something drastic changed Dr. Britcher and Dr. Ash work in the Aerospace department, not ME. They are incredible guys and will go to the ends of the earth for a student and deserve recognition along with everyone else involved. I met them at Langley and always admired the two with the upmost respect.

Great job guys, and congrats.

Quote:Ringleb and Britcher said the entire team worked well together throughout the two-semester-long project, for which the students were able to take part in a design process from concept through manufacturing, testing and design modifications, and ultimately deliver four functional wheels. Britcher said the team members made the most of a unique opportunity, which has opened some doors for themselves and for ODU.

Other team members included Amanda Gasparik, 30, from Pittsburgh; Luke Twum-Ampofo, 24, from Chesapeake; Michael Serra, 23, from Lorton, Va.; Mariel Gonzalez, 22, from Woodbridge, Va.; and JaMahl Sapp, 22, from Richmond, Va.

When I attended ODU.....Dr. Ash was the ME Dept. Dean and the overall Engineering Dean and Dr. Britcher was a professor in the ME Dept. The Aerospace Dept. spawned out of the ME or the MEM Dept as it was called back then. So good job Aerospace Engineering Dept.!
