At that time moving up was very different. All you had to do was give a 2 year notice and you could leave. There was no such thing as transition years. We went from 15-0 National Champs to 10-3 and winning the MAC Championship game and playing Ole Miss in a bowl. Our 3 losses that year was to WVU 42-31, Miami OH 45-21 and Ole Miss 34-31.

Kinda been downhill since then, hasn't it?

It seems like most of the anti-FBS people were against the move either because they were selfish (not willing to sacrifice a few drivable road games even though the quality would be much better), or they don't view App as being equal with schools in FBS. Hopefully the remaining few will change their opinion after a few years in the Belt.

Yet you haven't won a championship in that glorified D2 league since when?
Certainly it's been more recent than Georgia Southern's, but it hasn't happened lately as I recall. When was it, 2007? I honestly can't remember. And no, I can't recall who won the BCS title, the Sun Belt title or the flipping Bounced Check Bowl either.

This is what cracks me up most about those who point to competition when they say the grass is greener in FBS and their school has outgrown FCS. Until you're NDSU you can't really say that.

Talk to me when you have 3 Heisman finalist, a Baltnikoff winner, 4 top 25 finishes, a top 10 finish, 6 wins over ranked oppnts, one top 10 win and and an undefeated season in IA. All in the 1st 7 years of being IA.

Marshall is 135-70 since going IA and still only have 21 losses in Joan C Edwards stadium since it opened in 1991. A stadium GA Southern has only scored 10 points in and never won in. They scored 3 in 1993 and 7 in 1995. With the vaunted triple option. As I said the tripe option can be stopped if you have a disciplined defense.

Im thankful every day that our Admin left IAA 17 years ago and not just realizing they better move now, unlike some institutions.

If you didn't know or didn't realize, Marshall had the 6th best overall O- in IA last year avg. 535 yards per game and the #1 passing game in the nation with 353 yards per game in the air. Our QB is on pace to break both Pennington and Leftwich's passing records. Rakeem Cato threw for 4,201 yards last year and over 2 seasons has thrown for 6,260. Cato could have had up to 300 or more yards passing if he hadn't been taken out of the Western Carolina game half way through the 3rd qtr and taken out of the USM game at the beginning of the 4th qtr.

Rakeem Cato Soph. Highlights

We are also finally building the facilities we should have had in place in 2005.

We are currently building a new soccer complex:

Veteran's Memorial Soccer Complex

An IAF (Indoor Athletic Facility) it will have a full 120 yard football field, 100 yards plus both endzones, a 6 lane 300 meter track, nets and batting cages for both baseball and softball, rolling tennis courts and seating for 750-1000 people. In this complex there will also be a Hall of Fame, Academic Center and a Sports Medicine facility:

Marshall IAC Groundbreaking

Sorry to be so long winded, but I hate to see general or blind statements made without merit.

(07-27-2013 08:51 PM)Saint3333 Wrote:  Let's tell the whole story.

Here you go, Marshall got hit by the NCAA hard to cover the Alabama sanctions. Alabama at the time was hit with sanctions but not as hard as they should have been. They had 15 scholarships taken away over an 8 year period. Basically a 1.9 scholarship per year. And a TV and bowl ban for a year. This was due to improper gifts and payment of players.

The NCAA hit the jackpot when a former Marshall athletic dept employee contacted the NCAA and gave them info and told them they needed to investigate. This employee had been fired 3 months earlier for improper contact and not knowing compliance rules. Infractions Marshall had already turned into the NCAA.

The NCAA found that a Booster had employed 6 football players over a 3 year period and paid them what the NCAA considered a higher wage than what most people would get. He paid 6 players 15.00 an hour to do janitorial work. The NCAA said it was 3 dollars to high.

The NCAA also found at the time there was 3 players in a classical class (Classical is the study of Plato, Socrates and other philosophers). And that the instructor had gave the students old tests as a study guide. From this they put us down as LIC (Lack of Institutional Control). This gave them a better reason for the penalty they handed down to us.

The sanctions were:

1)No on site recruiting for a year- 2005 class was strictly recruited from film.
2)Limited official visits for 3 years- 2006, 2007, 2008 we only had 15 official visits, at the time you were allowed 27, its since raised to 35.
3)The loss of 30 scholarships over 2 years- In 2006 Marshall was playing IA ball with 67 scholarships. As you know 63 is the limit for IAA.

We gained back 5 scholarships per year until we get back to 85 scholarships. This year will be the 1st year since 2004 that we will play with 85 scholarships.

Our infractions if any were minor in comparison in what goes on at every SEC school except Vandy. And the top 15-20 programs in the nation. The only thing is they make the NCAA millions per year as Marshall doesn't.

I have no doubt if they could catch Boise in something they would hand them down about the same thing.

No one was going to win at Marshall from 2005-2011, I don't care who you are. Just wasn't going to happen.

There is your whole story....

Sorry, but that's total bunk. The idea that ONLY the reigning champ can make claims, is totally ridiculous. If you wanted to remain in the FCS and continue bragging about beating Wofford, Elon, Samford, etc. that's your choice. Nobody ever said that those teams can't be competitive. FCS is MADE for schools like that. It forces the playing field to be level. When we when, it's because we are SUPPOSED to win. When we don't, it's embarrassing. No, neither App nor GaSo has won the championship the past few years, but we've been in the mix despite having internal issues. Even in "down" years lately, App or GaSo can take the field and play a strong competitive game against the top of the FCS. This past year, App had issues on defense, but we could have squared off with NDSU. Maybe they beat us, maybe not.

Bottom line is that, at some point the environment limits the development of the program and keeps the programs from progressing. We are ready for the glass ceiling to be removed and for the opportunity to climb a taller mountain.

I was just about to post that. Considering the source I'm not surprised that he would outright lie about the timeline, events, sanctions, and punishments.

Poor Marshall, the big bad NCAA came down on them because players got jobs making $2 extra an hour. All to protect Alabama.

Actually, it was over 20 players over multiple years getting paid $25 an hour for janitor jobs that normally pay $6 an hour. These were non qualifiers, who are not allowed to get university help to find jobs. The university knew about these jobs, funneled players to them, and got an unfair advantage as a result

The stuff about classes is a flat out lie as well. An assistant professor who was associated with the football program gave players "study guides" to help with tests in a class. These "study guides" we're nothing but the full test from the year before. Only football players got these. When the rest of the class found out, everybody in the class got an A.

Herdzoned had got to be the worst poster on these forums. I don't know why he felt the need to dive into these sanctions that nobody asked about, and I really don't know why he felt the need to tell such an extravagant and ridiculous set of lies. What a joke

It's good that this was split into another thread, but I seriously doubt Herdzoned will be back to defend his baldfaced lie. That seems to be his MO; come make some douchey, untrue comments them run away when he is called on it.

Guess he was wrong.

What's so odd is when Marshall was in the MAC previously, they were in the MAC twice, the MAC people will tell you that they left because they had triple digit NCAA violations they were dealing with. So evidently this was not the first string of years with NCAA problems.

Marshall created their own problems over the years by taking talented non-qualifying players they just could not control themselves from taking. That article mentioned also giving more scholarships than they were allowed to give. Makes you wonder how many scholarship players they were actually playing with many of those years.
Hope the problem has been resolved, but keeps coming back years apart.

Yes Marshal was forced out of the MAC and it was due to those violations way back in the day (allegedly there were 144 violations in football and basketball back in 1968-69). Marshal is one of the very few examples of a school forced out of a conference. The second time after they came back did not get them kicked out but it certainly did not help their reputation.

Yeah, have heard about Marshall being forced to leave the MAC from many MAC posters. Didn't know they had 144 violations in football and basketball. That's higher than what had heard previously.

We have the worst of those guys. We have a guy that says Aaron Murray could start in GSU's option offense over Jerrick McKinnon, despite being tiny, slow, and soft. A guy that has never took a snap in the option.

This same loser says that Johnny Manziel wouldn't start for 6 or 7 "SEC" teams. We still have a lot of growing.

This guy posts on absolutely everything, and no one has the stones to tell him he is a fish.

This same loser says that Johnny Manziel wouldn't start for 6 or 7 "SEC" teams. We still have a lot of growing.

This guy posts on absolutely everything, and no one has the stones to tell him he is a fish.

Most coaches would've sent Manziel packing. He's a head case, nobody is stupid enough to go to a frat party at Texas as aTm's heisman winning, starting quarterback. Saban, Muschamp, Spurrier, Freeze, Franklin, Pinkel, Mullen and Richt would've sent him packing.
Dooley would've kept him, but well, he's Dooley.
And App/Ga. Southern, neither one of ya'll need to sit on an ivory tower about NCAA violations.

App, this is alot worse than academic fraud.

Here's the point, EVERY SCHOOL, and I mean every school has skeletons in their closet. As fans, none of us can throw stones related to NCAA violations or douchebaggery with its' student athletes. I mean geez guys, gang rapes at Vanderbilt, academic dishonesty and a basketball player at Lipscomb dealing drugs, all in the last 24 months. It's everywhere.

That is a very serious offense and as the father of two daughters I can't think of anything worse.

App has had issues like every school. But the one referenced above no one was ever convicted of any crime.

We've had players kicked off the team for drugs, fights, drunk driving, but situation above was an unfortunate case of guilty in public not in the court of law. All players were kicked off the team (before they were found innocent in student court and district court), including one that transferred to Colorado St and now is in the NFL.

Everyone has issues no doubt, but some universities take action (even before they should sometimes).

I always heard the first victim was a student athlete and that's why she didn't come forward.
I can deal with the drinking, the occasional failed drug test and general 18-21 year old stupidity, that one, much like Chattanooga's problem and the rumors of even ETSU's I can't.
