ST. JOSEPH — The Chiefs released veteran wide receiver Mardy Gilyard on the eve of training camp Thursday.

Gilyard previously played for the Rams, Eagles and Jets, catching a total of eight passes.

The Chiefs still have 12 wide receivers in camp and all should be available to participate in the first practice session Friday at Missouri Western State University. Donnie Avery, a free-agent signing, missed most of offseason practice because of a high ankle sprain but has been cleared to practice.

Releasing him doesn't surprise me. The timing surprises me a bit.

Man, I just don't get it. Mardy was unstoppable at UC, I thought at the very least he'd catch on as a punt/kick returner somewhere... poor Mardy. As always, I wish him the best.

Every time I have had a conversation with someone who should know the situation with Mardy, they say it is mental, not physical. Similar to Akili Smith.

I find that odd. Wasnt he the one working three jobs, living out of his car, while still going to school? Lazy (or dense) doesnt seem to fit. But hey, maybe he got complacent. Still though, I hope he catches on somewhere, if not the NFL, maybe up in the CFL with Collaros.

I can see how perhaps the complexities of the NFL wr position could overwhelm. It's not like he was running anything complex here at UC.

Poor guy. At this point it really seems like the CFL is the best chance to catch on.
