The press release answered it. Technically, it was last December, for the Armed Forces Bowl. 04-jawdrop

But for regular season, it was Texas in 2010.

Quote:The ESPN broadcast is the first of 10 televised contests for Rice and marks the team's first regular season appearance on ESPN since the 2010 season opener against Texas. The Owls' Armed Forces Bowl victory over Air Force in December aired on the network's flagship channel as well.

It's ATM, so you'll have to stand to see the game anyway.

But yeah, Saturday afternoon in August looks like the perfect opportunity to watch from my a/c living room while unpacking boxes.

Ahh, but if you watched that game, you may recall that it was only a broadcast of SMU and head coach June Jones. The name of the host team was barely mentioned.

It was even more egregious in that regard than the Texas game in 1994. In both cases, the featured team lost, but it wasn't clear from the broadcast who they lost to.

on a Sunday, October 16, 1994. (?)

I liked the results.

The Rice allotment of tickets are in the lower endzone corner. They're terrible seats and A&M should be ashamed of themselves for throwing the guest team's fans down there. If you want good seats, go to stubhub. They have some in the upper deck left for under $120 and you won't have to stand up the whole game.

When you can fill the rest of the stadium with alumni who must give bucks to the 12th Man in order to get those tickets, visiting fans are going to end up in sucky seats. Would be nice to have that problem. We never have.

The seats could be worse. Other schools such as Notre Dame, Ohio State, and others place the visiting fans in the upper deck corners.

Also, if you buy through stub hub or other brokers you are doing Rice a disservice. They don't get a cut from those sales.

aTm's athletic department cares about aTm, not the handful of Rice fans that show up. Good seats are for loyal (and contributing) fans.

If Rice was regularly selling out HRS to Rice fans, we sure wouldn't be seating visiting fans at the 50 yard line.

If it's any consolation, they put the UT fans in the same place for every game I can remember.

I called the Rice ticket office and begged for more tickets.. But they couldn't commit any more than a few.. Even if I upped my donation. So I went to a broker. Plus I wanted better seats than end zone. I bought the alloted tickets too. I'll probably donate them.

RE: Season opener details announced
I am curious: for away or neutral-site games, what relative value do people place on:
(1) sitting in a section that is mostly with fellow Rice fans, versus
(2) getting a good view of the game?

As many of you know, I personally value (1) as more important that (2) by a pretty big margin.

But my impression from many posts in this and other threads is that a lot of fans really don't value (1) at all. It surprises me that I am, apparently, such an outlier in this regard.

To be clear, I am not criticizing either preference. I'm just surprised.

When I go to a Rice game, I like to be essentially surrounded by fellow Rice fans. Being in a big group makes it much more fun to belt out the fight song, trade high fives on good plays, and cook up spontaneous post-game plans for pizza or beer of whatever -- and to me, these are aspects of going to the game that I look forward to. One may to ensure being in a big group of like fans is to organize such a group myself and buy a block of tickets. As some of you know, I have done that on many occasions in the past, but it is a painful and under-appreciated time investment (think herding cats) that I have lost energy for repeating. So the next best option is to get tickets in the designated Rice section.

For similar reasons, my feeling about viewing parties is that it is important to designate one site (even if it's not the IDEAL one) and get people to go there, rather than scatter among multiple venues.

I understand what you're saying. But in this case, that stadium has so many crummy seats that I opted for a better view, rather than sitting in a friendlier section with potentially minimal view.
For what it's worth, this approach has had mixed results for me in the past. I've had great seats in Austin in the past .. Only to be surrounded by UT jerks with no sense of humor.

#1. Absolutely. I once sat at UT a few sections away from that small, friendly block of blue over in the corner. I desperately wanted to be over there so I could express out loud how bogus that non-intereference call was when the 'horn grabbed the Owl receiver's helmet in the end zone. At least my seat was free and the orange people around me were polite.

I always want to sit with other Owl fans. It is why I was so upset with the last Rice/UT game at Reliant. It was supposed to be a Rice Home game, but there was no Rice section.

Seeing the game is more important to me. I'm not much of a conversation partner during the games, I get more into coach/analyst mode.

And I'm worse about it with rugby than football.

Afflicted.... that is what I was trying to say. I was told the visitor seats are terrible. What the heck is wrong with A&M? As big as that stadium is why can't they alot some decent seat!!!01-lauramac2

You want better seats, you give money to the 12th Man.

When you can fill up your stadium and use it to extort that kind of money, those are the seats that the visitors get.

During the late 80s/early 90s, we had a lot of Owl Club members who were Arkansas alums. They joined the Owl Club to get our ticket allotment for the SWC basketball tournament.

I agree with Owl Mom - I don't want to have to stand the entire game. I'm not 20 years old any more and if I pay for a seat, I want to be able to sit in it (if I want to stand, then I'll pay for a SRO ticket). If seats are being sold in a section where fans stand the entire game, then they should be offered at a discount given that they are "obstructed view" tickets.

I agree with George Webb - I would rather be in a section with Owl fans, even if the view from the sears are not that great, than in a better section with the other team's fans. However, I still want to be able to sit in a seat!
